I've done a lot of translation for book projects focused on Japanese fighting and wrestling. I'm sharing pieces at Hybrid Shoot.
In 1984, a band of renegades created a new wrestling that would eventually birth Japanese MMA. This is their origin story.

By coincidence or design, today both @pwoloss.bsky.social's Wrestling Playlist and @jonathansnowden.bsky.social's Hybrid Shoot discuss the Maeda/Choshu shoot kick incident from 1987. You can read the most thorough examination of one kick you can imagine here

Sayama invited him to be a founder of UWF, but after Maeda's powerplay in '85 turned the promotion into strictly shootstyle Mach decided to retire in his prime. In later years he lived in California and became a gear maker, before passing away in '21. Here he is showing off some of his creations:

I really hope this shit idiot tries to do a startup shootstyle company and falls flat on his ass. I'm sure Chris Dickinson will work your shows bro.
You come in, you takeover a gimmick show that was someone else's gimmick. You use the infrastructure and connections of the country's most successful indie, then go on to talk shit about the indies because your "vision" can't be realized under the indie ecosystem.
I can't believe this fucking dork thought anyone wanted to watch his fucking worked MMA gimmick show more than once a year.
"Brett's on the road every week."
Yeah, because GCW the way it is draws people in on a consistent basis.

I'm taking seat #1 so we can talk about shootstyle wrestling for a little bit but then spend most of the rest of the flight in contented silence
You HAVE to pick a seat on the flight to the next #AEWDynamite.
Who are you sitting next to and how will you try to spend your time?

Like his student Suzuki, Fujiwara has this nonchalance to his matches; it's very "well, what have you got?" knowing that he's gonna counter it. Even in the original UWF matches with Sayama where he's getting his ass beat, he employs a very reactionary approach to shootstyle and there's few better.

Before the #Newborn era, there was #UWFJapan. A movement that rejected the theatrical for the #ShootStyle truth. This #OldSchool tribute honors the legends who traded the ropes for the #CatchWrestling mat. Authenticity for fans of #Puroresu history.

Yes. The Bloodsport thing was never meant to be super serious shootstyle, brother. It did always have the martial arts/MMA bent to it though.
But getting this humorless about something named after an absurd JCVD movie makes this all the more insane.

One of the most fascinating matches I saw last year involved One Called Manders in Bloodsport. Approached it exactly like "what if Stan Hansen went to UWF?" a big ex football player pro wrestler with no skills in the style but tough. Character work entirely through shootstyle.
