Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestBeaks. The beak of the #NorthernShrike is not dramatically large or colourful. However, that little hook gives this songbird an edge in its hunting, allowing it to function somewhat like a tiny bird of prey.

Hunting prey such as lizards, voles and other songbirds, Shrikes are a unique family of carnivorous songbirds but it's what they do with their prey that makes them so fascinating.

They impale their prey on spikes and thorns, often within a favoured area in their territory known as a larder!

It certainly was Steve. We don’t get many shrikes in Derbyshire so this was a real treat

Today’s #BirdoftheDay theme is #Borbs; little birds looking round and plump. I have no idea what these two #LoggerheadShrike are doing, but it’s kinda adorable considering that they’re known as the “butcher bird” for how they deal with their prey. Southern Florida. #Birds

Also tons of lovely birds, kestrels, Shrikes, A very helpful Phoebe that kept the flies away from our camp, and very photogenic Scrub Jays, also endemic to the island.

"As he returns his Devon sheep farm to wild nature, [Derek Gow] is also breeding storks, wildcats, red-backed shrikes, glowworms & even adders....Over the hedge, [Derek] Banbury, his neighbour, is proud to be an intensive farmer, producing milk and beef cattle behind tightly clipped hedges."

thinking about the time destiny's sparrows were called shrikes

Loggerhead shrikes are carnivorous songbirds’ knowns as a “butcher bird” because they impale their prey on thorns or barbed wire. These birds lack the strong talons of raptors, so they use sharp objects to anchor and tear apart their food. “Loggerhead” is an old synonym for blockhead...

i'd say shrikes: they're the birds that impale their prey on spikes

also i initially misread the question as "which animal HAS the..." and it got me thinking

Our first sporting fixture, the classic rivalry, Shrikes v Whippoorwills!
September 19, 2026 at 11:28 PM
The shrikes are the only songbirds that are also birds of prey. They are commonly called "butcher birds" for their habit of storing small animals they have caught impaled on thorns or barbed wire.

"Gow is an outspoken rewilder widely credited with bringing back the beaver in England. As he returns his Devon sheep farm to wild nature, he is also breeding storks, wildcats, red-backed shrikes, glowworms and even adders to return to the countryside."

Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) is the only shrike about right now. The summer Lesser Grays have left and the winter Great Grays haven't arrived yet, although they should start showing up at the end of this month. #BirdingHungary #shrikes #birding #birds

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Mamas&Papas, male & female of the same species in the same photo.

I photographed this mated pair of loggerhead shrikes at a local park last year. They successfully raised three young.

For today’s #BirdoftheDay theme of #Mamas&Papas, I have these two Loggerhead Shrikes nuzzling, or something. In the second image, one is looking in the other’s mouth,
maybe making sure they’re not hoarding food? 🤷 #Birds
