When Iraq gained independence in 1932, its sovereignty remained constrained by Britain. The monarchy responded by building a powerful military that soon turned its guns on the country’s own people.

The Hashemite Kingdom of Iraq was the Iraqi state located in the Middle East from 1932 to 1958. It was founded on 23 August 1921 as the Kingdom of Iraq, following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the Mesopotamian campaign of the First World War. Although a League of Nations mandate was awarded to the United Kingdom in 1920, the 1920 Iraqi revolt resulted in the scrapping of the original mandate plan in favour of a formally sovereign Iraqi kingdom, but one that was under effective British administration. The plan was formally established by the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty.

SORYA, Iraq — The modern history of the Suraye (Chaldeans-Syriacs-Assyrians) is overshadowed by massacres and genocides. After the Sayfo Genocide, the Kafno, and the Simele Massacre, the wronged Suraya people were subjected to another massacre on 16 September 1969, in the remote village of Sorya, in the Zakho district of Nohadra (Duhok Governorate) in what is now the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Members of the Suraye (Syriac–Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community and others interested in Suraye affairs gathered on 9 August 2026 for a ceremony organized by the Gothenburg branch of the Assyrian Democratic Movement (Zowaa), in cooperation with the Ashur Banipal Club, to mark Assyrian Martyrs’ Day and the 93rd anniversary of the Simele Massacre. BAGHDAD / YEREVAN — Two painful events in the history of the Suraye (Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian) people are marked on 7 August, namely the 1933 Simele Massacre in Iraq and the 1915 Sayfo Genocide, perpetrated against Suraye, Armenians, and Pontic Greeks by the Ottoman army and allied Kurdish tribes during World War I. On the occasion, calls have been renewed for official recognition of these tragedies, as well as for justice, the protection of diversity, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.

TEL TAMR, Gozarto (Jazira) ─ On the anniversary of the Simele Massacre and Assyrian Martyrs’ Day, the Coordination and Consultation Committee of the National Syriac-Assyrian Parties held a commemoration at The Church of the Saint in Tel Tamr, Gozarto (Jazira). The event was attended by representatives of institutions affiliated with the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB) and political parties and civil society organizations.
