A knitting update: here’s a progress photo of my current large project, a shallow triangle shawl using one skein of variegated handspun and two solid colors of millspun from the Junction Fiber Mill.

I'm mosaic knitting. This is Ambah O'Brien's Betwixt shawl and I've just completed two Betwixt repeats. I'm using a gradient dyed mini skein set from Silly Little Sheep. The yarn really is blue but the back knit with it makes it look purple. #KnitSky #WIP

There are so many great bits of Carson's writing to share but my absolute favourite is this portion from 'Candor': "...like a skein being produced inside the belly day after day, it has to get itself woven out somewhere."

This ferret needs 39 colors, the average price for 1 skein is $1.7, if taken individually. That's $66, which is almost 1/6 of my monthly fee.
I understand that it will take time to embroider, and it will be inexpensive in a day, but damn. Seriously. It's expensive.😂

wholesale quantities of floss, and that's $0.5 per skein.

There is also a floss cutting service - 14 cents per 1 meter = $ 1.3 per skein
There's a low purchasing power here, I've never used DMC, they're used by one manufacturer of kits, but their kits are expensive lol.

Bestex, you can really find it for 10 cents.
Polyester is not more expensive than 5 cents (they can be used to embroider crosses, but of course, these are my least favorite)
In stores (in sets), you can find a dollar per skein. It seems there are groups where people discount on buying

Oh, ha. I usually use domestically produced threads (I'm not a sophisticated consumer, it's enough for it to be 100% cotton) Gamma Floss, Kirova = 25 cents for a skein of 8 meters, Riolis (wool/acrylic) - 15 cents for a skein of 8 meters (but there 1 thread, not 6).

Made some good yarn
October 8, 2026 at 2:28 AM
My dog got into my knitting bag and unraveled a skein of yarn all over the living room. Today I am thankful that it was a $3 clearance skein and not my "good" yarn. I am also thankful that he didn't unravel my wip.

A Self-Imposed Sock Club

My Local Yarn Shop has launched a fun initiative: a self-imposed sock club. The idea is to use yarns in your stash (or, perhaps buy a skein or two for planning purposes) and get some socks knit. You pick 12 skeins, put them in 12 project bags along with 12 patterns, and…
A Self-Imposed Sock Club
My Local Yarn Shop has launched a fun initiative: a self-imposed sock club. The idea is to use yarns in your stash (or, perhaps buy a skein or two for planning purposes) and get some socks knit. You pick 12 skeins, put them in 12 project bags along with 12 patterns, and each month, you pick a new project bag and get knitting. This is the start to my self-imposed sock club membership. I've picked a number of my skeins—some are full skeins, some a partial, and some are REALLY partial to become Frankenstein left-over socks—and I've matched them up with patterns.

The issue with my hoarding, as I am sure you will immediately understand, is that for a project larger than a hat, you need a lot of matching yarn in the same type/size/etc. And when you only buy one skein, well, you can't make a hexagon cardigan with one skein. Or a skein and a half.

Sunset view. Much cooler after the rain cleared away so I had to dig out my gansey for the first time since spring. Owls in good voice tonight along with the occasional skein of geese.

Amidst all the bullshit I can encourage anyone to get one of the cheap old spinning wheels on eBay and learn to spin.
I practiced treadling and twisted some yarn and then wound into a skein with my niddi-noddy and all the tension is now gone from my body.
Also, fiber is cheap.

I never really got into self striping, I’m too chaotic for it to work (don’t even mention planned pooling, that is witch craft). And whilst I love the look of variegated yarn when it’s in a skein I’ve yet to find anything that actually looks great once crocheted or knitted

Wow the yarn winder I bought is life changing for my crocheting.
The skein I bought had areas where I couldn't get it to rotate at all without a ton of force and now I can actually keep even tension!!

This is the yarn, it was too late for me to want to get up to take the picture

Originally I wasn't going to get another skein, so I split one in half. Now I'll need to split the new one in half too

JK, they won't sell individuals of the purple, hope the pink matches 🥹

#Socktober is off to a rough start. I mostly had this sock done but mom said it was too tight for her. She likes them looser than they should be. Jumping from 2mm to 2.5mm should do the trick. Meanwhile there's a Halloween skein of Nomadic Yarn calling my name. 🎃🧦🧶 #LunchtimeKnitting #sockknitting

Another lovely morning at Festival Gardens. Highlights: a kestrel flew into a nearby tree serenaded by a Cetti's, a skein of pinkies overhead, quite a few goldcrest, and fungi popping up all over 🪶 🍄

I have a 2nd (different) skein of the lovely WYS 'Butterfly' series, too... really loving seeing the colour speckles appear in the patterns... just feels a tad 'rough' (as any 'wool'/'new wool' yarn)... it obv would; compared to "Merino"! 🤷🏻‍♀️😜🤣

All good practice though; and i so love small yarn... 🧶
