Yeah, they were the worst. Plus they are super fragile. The stupidest way to use them is in a Flash Path SmartDisk device: insert your Smartmedia, then pop it into your floppy drive... So sloooooow.....

One of the downsides of collecting so many gadgets is the need to save different storage devices. From MMC to Smartmedia to Memorystick: my drawer of storage cards keeps getting fuller.

I love the aesthetics of this thing

also, it has a floppy drive!

If anyone wanna part with a QT200, or Fuji DS7 or DS8 that they don't plan on using, for cheap, I'm interested. Preferably in Europe due to shipping. I don't need the unobtainium 5v Smartmedia card, I have one. TYA!

Meiner hat noch die alte Karte.

It's SUPER interesting! Sadly, SmartMedia cards had a super short shelf life, so the odds of finding working ones are pretty low. I do hope someone finds the five undumped ones someday and preserves them though.

All of them are full into `smartmedia` hustle.
The web-based smartphones (with cams) changed a whole civil soc. completely.
The group pressure is gigantic-you cant escape now and there are multiple issues to trigger some kids too.

The DC290 is a later model with higher resolution and it can run custom scripts (and even DOOM).

For a cheap really crappy early cam the Sharp VN-EZ1 is fun (uses 3.3V smartmedia).

My first digital camera in 2001 a whooping 3 Megapixels used Smartmedia Memory Cards.

64Mb for something like £50 each !
June 21, 2026 at 9:03 PM
Yup! Sold those, too. I even have a card reader for SmartMedia somewhere as I was convinced that in the future (now) lots of people wouldn't have access to their pictures they never printed. Never got one for Sony Memory sticks, those guys are screwed.

SD cards? Luxury. When I were a lad it were SmartMedia cards and you were lucky to get 2Mb.

I have two Olympus Camedia D-360Ls i need to test but have absolutely no clue where my only SmartMedia card reader ended up... so that's in the backlog!

What truly feels anachronistic to me is SmartMedia cards... so shiny... so strange... they look like little chips an alien cyborg would use to install different emotions into their OS or something.
June 12, 2026 at 3:45 PM
They are, and they're not cheap nowadays. They also take SmartMedia cards, which I've discovered are not that easy to come by.

64mb? wow you were really living large.

a 64mb smartmedia card is pretty expensive now if you sell it on ebay
