I didn't grow up with a lot of money so I always had a slower modem than everyone else (first one was a second hand Hayes 300 baud Smartmodem). I spent way too much time on the BBSes and then AOL came and it was all downhill from there.

I knew exactly what it was: a key to a thousand doors.
Hayes Smartmodem 300. In 1981, the firm of Hayes introduced its Smartmodem, a device for linking computer systems and telephone lines, with the phone attached through a RS-232 port. The status of the device was indicated by a series of lights across the front - it might be set to auto answer (AA), carrier detect (CD), off hook (OH), receive data (RD), send data (SD), terminal ready (TR) and modem ready (MR).

Habe damals dann sehr gespart und (mit Hilfe von Oma/Opa!) dann ein Jahr später ein (illegales) Hayes "Smartmodem" mit 1200 Baud gekauft. 🤭

Damals gab es noch Mailboxen (statt Internet) .. lang ist es her .. wilde Zeit mit dem C64 bei mir 😄

Started out my BBS days with a used Hayes 2400 Smartmodem.

Trade Wars was awesome. I also played the hell out of Global War, a Risk clone.

I ran a 1 line BBS using JetBBS then later Wildcat where I also had FidoNet. 14.4k modems were like lightning back then.
