His right cheekbone was swelling beneath his eye. His breath was ragged, his lips twitching, his eartips almost purple; it was a sight quite satisfying. Virgil stood over him and extended his hand. "Are you finished?" Grinning, Rushak waved off the help and retied his boot lace before rising to his feet. "This is not over," Cerel mouthed behind his hand. Rushak kept his grin up, but now it felt mechanical. They stood in the last of their cover at the edge of the Lago Mountains' EASTern foothills, in the trees on a promontory. The green of the Southlands has burned to grey dust. Ash lies over long-dead pastures, and streams that once brought down the snowmelt in clear crisp water now move sluggish and discoloured through the land, rocks slowly dissolving into an ugly rust-coloured ooze as slicks of acrid-smelling oils lie behind in the mud. No birds sing any more and orcs march on the old drove roads. There was once a village named Tirharad here. You can still see its traces if you know where to look, in the outlines of buildings (wooden walls long removed, turned to fuel and arrows), an abandoned well, broken pieces of pottery scattered in the dirt like teeth, though the people are dead and gone and even the corpses of their livestock have long since been repurposed into the machinery of industry and war. A little way outside the village, though, one strange sight remains: one fallen log surrounded by a small grove of trees, moss and grasses and leaves all still green and bright and the sun somehow held in the sky above them as though this place in all this dark land has been held out of time. The orcs know better than to ask the Dark Lord why.
