Completed in 1792 under the direction of Joachim Koch, son of the merchant Koch, Kose Summer Manor stood for generations on the peaceful banks of the Pirita River. Its elegant main house was accompanied by a collection of outbuildings constructed shortly thereafter, making the estate one of the region's distinguished country residences. In 1939, the manor was purchased by the Scheel family, but their ownership was short-lived. Following the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the estate was seized by the NKVD, the Soviet secret police, and transformed into a place of imprisonment, interrogation, and execution. In 1941, the NKVD carried out a mass execution in the manor's former servants' house. The crime remained hidden until the following year, when the unusual behavior of horses led investigators to search the building. Beneath the floor, the bodies of 25 victims were discovered. Further excavations across the manor grounds uncovered mass graves containing the remains of more than 70 people. Evidence suggested that at least some of the victims may have been buried alive, making Kose Summer Manor one of the most haunting sites of Soviet terror in Estonia. These photographs do not attempt to recreate the past. Instead, they explore what remains: weathered walls, boarded windows, and a forest slowly reclaiming a place marked by profound human suffering. Light and shadow reveal fragments of a history that refuses to disappear, inviting viewers to reflect on how landscapes preserve memory long after voices have fallen silent.
