#SpaceJunk
Why did #spacex clap a huge fire ball in the ocean? Why is this something to cheer? And who is going to clear up all the #spacejunk ? Even if he doesn’t care about planet Earth surely Elon Musk can’t want to fill space with more & more pieces of metal that damage his spaceships? Let’s clear it up!

However promising this repertoire of shielding types is, though, much will hinge on what they encounter. Projectiles range from chunks of metal and pieces of plastic to rocks and flecks of paint, and the mix varies with the orbit. #spacejunk #kesslersyndrome

More #spacejunk: A reconnaissance satellite suffered an unidentified anomaly and broke apart into pieces. Those fragments are trapped in a high altitude above Earth, where they risk a head-on collision with another object.

The Scale of the Problem: More than 30,000 objects larger than 10 cm are cataloged, but an estimated 1.2+ million pieces of debris between 1 cm and 10 cm—each capable of mission-ending kinetic damage at orbital speeds exceeding 17,000 mph—remain difficult to track continuously. #spacejunk

Why the US Space Force Is Tapping into Public 'Space Junk' Data
“Mission Delta 2,” the Space Force’s effort to collect data on objects in space, is preparing to collect public data on the location of debris—so as to avoid future collisions. The US military already operates a global network of radars and optical telescopes capable of tracking objects in orbit. Meanwhile, commercial companies are simultaneously generating enormous amounts of independent tracking data. Though both the military and the commercial sector are pursuing this effort by themselves, both are doing it for the same reason: vast amounts of space debris can damage satellites and complicate attempts to launch additional payloads into orbit, requiring constant tracking efforts. A problem has developed where both the military and commercial information streams operate in parallel rather than being automatically fused into the same picture, leading to wasted dual effort. To resolve this problem, the Space Force plans to launch a new prototype software environment to change that inefficiency. “Mission Delta 2,” the Space Force organization developing the prototype, should launch the effort this fall and rapidly develop a minimum viable product with the goal of automatically combining commercial and military observations into a faster picture of all activity in orbit. What Is “Mission Delta 2,” and...
