#Spittlebug
An interesting observation from the summer - Spittlebug froth is bitter to keep predators away, but sometimes paper wasps are able to snatch larvae from their frothy protection. The adult wasps feed larvae to their babies. #WaspWednesday

Seeing spittle bug spit makes me feel like a little kid again. I don't know why I get excited, I just do.

New day, new species [apparently]! 🥰 I photographed this #froghopper / #spittlebug ( #Hemiptera: #Cercopidae ) in Costa Rica this past August. An expert just mentioned that it's likely a new sp.: www.inaturalist.org/observations...

Even the most conspicuous of creatures can be undescribed!

Did you know? It's bugs in there

BTW, if you've ever wondered who lives in a pile of spittlebug froth, I've got you covered. Here is a spittlebug nymph early in the process of making its bubbly hiding spot. They make the bubbles by adding air to fluid waste along with a sticky secretion to make the bubbles stay foamy.

Can't get over how clear/bubble-free this spittle mass is. You can easily see the spittlebug nymph inside. It's like a tiny fish (bug?) bowl! 🤩

P.S. - that fluid all came from its anus 😳

A froghopper, possibly a meadow spittlebug whose nymph stage lives inside a glob of 'cuckoo spit' to avoid predation and dessication.

Cool find of the day today is awesome! Not only is this a beautiful paper wasp, but she's eating spittlebug froth? Such an interesting behavior. Paper wasps typically feed on nectar and the froth is bitter. Maybe she's very hungry?

Spittlebug nymphs (Hemiptera: Cercopoidea) create masses of bubbles from their butts. They sit in these bubbles while feeding on plants in order to hide from predators. This individual was feeding on a night-flowering silene (Caryophyllaceae: Silene noctiflora). Blissfield Michigan, 20 May 2011.
