My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

In 2020 I illustrated LOCKED IN TIME, written by @deanrlomax.bsky.social. Here's my painting of a pair of mating Jurassic froghoppers.

This book would make a great Christmas gift! cup.columbia.edu/book/locked-...

Cuckoo Spit on some Ribwort Plantain. Absolutely nothing to do with a Cuckoo. It is produced by the nymphs of froghoppers, also called spittlebugs, which feed on plant sap and excrete a frothy substance that protects them from predators and environmental conditions. #photography #EastCoastKin

Little Dartmouth today. More Oil-beetles (2 Black & 2 Violet), 20+ Red-and-black Froghoppers Cercopis vulnerata, and single Green Hairstreak. Also singing Reed Warbler and Cetti’s Warbler surprise birds on the cliff tops.
Thanks John Walters for help with Oil-beetle ID over the last few weeks!

Quiz time – Spot the odd one out 🐜🔍

Four insects, one different species. Can you spot it? Bonus point if you can say what gives it away 👀

Today’s #BOTW / #BugoftheWeek is the aptly named Spittle Bug.

AKA Cercopidae and Froghoppers

At first I thought this was frog foam, but it turns out to be a bubbly nymph-fest!

Love these little guys!
We did a little project with them on my Ecology degree, to see if the spittle did protect them from predators.. it did!
I think we called them 'froghoppers'? Is that a recognised name too?
TBH spittlebug is a much better name!

Today during a hike with @StanfordBioPhD students we noticed these foam balls on #Artemisia #californica (also known as #California #sagebrush). These are likely made by Cuckoo-Spit Spittlebug Froghoppers (Family: Aphrophoridae). #Aphrophoridae #Froghoppers #Spittlebug (1/2)

Nature inspires several disciplines, such as biomechanics. Froghoppers' (Cercopoidea) hind leg muscles are shaped and arranged to store and release energy like a catapult. This enables them to accelerate 4x faster and jump 135x higher than fleas relative to body length 😮.

Apparently today is national bubble bath day, so I'd like to give a shoutout to spittlebugs! Also known as froghoppers, they get their name because the nymphs produce this foam to protect themselves. 🫧 #bugsky #hemiptera #insect #spittlebug

Heaving shapes worked their way out of the foam-burnished black bodies with red heads and two orange stripes. "What have you done to the spittlebugs?" Ava asked.
"They've just grown up-they're froghoppers now," a ladybug answered.
A froghopper whistled.
The ladybug blushed. "#Fresh!" #vss365 46
