According to the latest standardized test scores released by the Ontario government's Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), students in the province have shown negligible improvement in math, reading, and writing across various grade levels. For Grade 6 students in English-language schools, only 52 per cent met the provincial standard for math, a one-percentage-point increase from the previous year. The percentages for reading and writing remained unchanged at 86 per cent and 85 per cent, respectively. Grade 3 students saw slight increases of one per cent in math (65 per cent meeting standards) and reading (75 per cent), with writing improving by two percentage points (67 per cent). Grade 9 students in math showed a one-percentage-point increase to 59 per cent meeting standards, while Grade 10 literacy test results rose by one per cent to 86 per cent. French-language school students performed relatively better across most subjects. Education Minister Paul Calandra acknowledged the results as 'encouraging' but emphasized that 'too many students continue to struggle, achievement gaps persist, and results remain uneven across the province.' The minister noted that an expert advisory body appointed in March is reviewing student assessment and achievement, with a final report expected upon completion of their review. The EQAO tests students annually in Grades 3, 6, 9, and 10, with provincial standards equivalent to a B grade. The data highlights ongoing challenges in Ontario's education system, particularly in math proficiency, despite minor improvements in some areas.
