The Guardian's review of Amazon's 'Masterplan' highlights the film's shortcomings despite its intriguing premise. The movie follows a group of criminals, led by Stanley Tucci as the British mastermind Roger, who plan to steal the Mona Lisa from the Louvre. The film features a cast including Simona Tabasco as Chiara, a cybersecurity hacker, and Victor Belmondo as Jay, an explosives expert, who are revealed to be siblings. The review notes that while the film attempts to blend heist movie tropes with modern technology, it falls flat due to its reliance on clichés and underdeveloped characters. Tucci, known for his versatile performances in recent years, is described as 'wasted' in this role, with his character veering into parody rather than delivering a compelling lead. The plot involves elaborate schemes including drone technology, VR intrusion, and a forgotten tunnel under the Louvre, but the review criticizes the film for its lack of originality and the implausible sibling romance subplot. The director, Thomas Vincent, is credited with some successful moments, particularly in the espionage elements, but the overall execution is deemed forgettable. The film is compared unfavorably to the Ocean's 11 franchise, lacking their ingenuity. Despite some clever twists, such as the use of a helium balloon, the review concludes that 'Masterplan' is a forgettable film that might serve as background entertainment but won't be remembered after a week. The review also notes the film's attempts to incorporate nods to the female and gay male gaze, such as Tabasco's platinum wig scene and the camera's focus on Belmondo's character. The film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
