What is human #StatisticalLearning for? The standard assumption is that the goal of SL is to learn the regularities in the environment to guide behavior. In our new Psych Review paper, we argue that SL instead is provides the basis for novelty detection within an information foraging system

Our theoretical note 'Statistical Learning Subserves a Higher Purpose: Novelty Detection in an Information Foraging System' is now out in Psych Review. #StatisticalLearning

We argue that our environment (including our linguistic environment) is far from fixed: It's dynamic, and we interact with it.

Our paper is out! We found that when the human brain builds predictive representations implicitly, mind wandering can support the process—linked to slow and delta-range oscillations.

Mind wandering during implicit learning is associated with increased periodic EEG activity and improved extraction of hidden probabilistic patterns
Mind wandering, occupying 30-50% of our waking time, remains an enigmatic phenomenon in cognitive neuroscience. A large number of studies showed a negative association between mind wandering and atten...

Whereas our meta-analysis (doi.org/10.3917/anps...) indicates a significant but small association between #StatisticalLearning and #Language, the latest work by @haoyuzhou.bsky.social using 23 tasks and latent variable methods (a fishing net rather than rod!) reveals a stronger interconnection.
