Today we sadly commemorate the Kingston Road bus shelter in Galway, cruelly taken from us by #StormEowyn.

The tempest passed in hours; one year later the City Council & National Transport Authority still struggle to cope with the trauma. We stand in the rain, bow our heads and pray for deliverance.

This day last year we were preparing for #StormÉowyn as it approached Ireland. Weather models were showing forecast of wind gusts that sadly proved to be accurate with huge impacts in areas worst hit. The forestry industry is still cleaning up after 50 million trees were damaged!

This Saturday marks the anniversary of #StormEowyn, the worst storm ever to hit the country.

One year on and promised storm supports are still not in place

This government has to do better

In January #StormEowyn hit the country. Dolphins Barn firefighters responded to a scaffolding collapse in Harold's Cross during the storm.

We lost our second tree this calendar year. Lost a massive apparently healthy cherry tree to #StormEowyn in January and last night lost a long-dead hawthorn to #StormBram. In both cases we heard nothing and no secondary damage.
We think the hawthorn below fell in a tribute to Andy Goldsworthy.

By way of comparison, #StormEowyn produced a *gust* of 183 km/h in Ireland, which was a record.

We moved to rural Ireland a year ago and lose electricity every few months, usually for a day or so (one week was the longest after #StormEowyn). Love reading but get very twitchy without TV/internet after a few hours. And reading by candlelight is hard. So yes, I did start going to bed at 8pm...

Out for a wild walk before #StormAmy hits Clare for real. Love me a good storm. There's no bad weather, only bad clothing, and all that...

Say a little prayer for my #StormEowyn damaged ancient Horse Chestnut tree though 😬🙏 She's lopsided and heavy with leaves.

#StormEowyn was the UK’s most powerful wind storm for over a decade, a 100mph wind gust was recorded in #Lanarkshire.

💨Impacts: @metoffice.gov.uk issued a Red Warning for wind, and wider Amber Warning. Unfortunately there were 2 fatalities, 1m homes without power & thousands of trees blown down.

*Trigger* stillbirth

Our local park lost several magnificent trees in #StormEowyn. @lisburncastlereagh.bsky.social agreed to provide our local community arts group with a selection of rounds.

Several local #artists are now working on a collaborative project to create pieces on the former trees

We finally had a tree surgeon in yesterday to clear some fallen trees from #StormEowyn - lots of work to do now in clearing & stocking up the wood shed! But I also met a new neighbour who's a bit shy but I reckon they can be won over with carrots... #MayoLife #Woodland

🎥 European Forest Institute posted a video
After the Storm: Pathways to forest recovery and restoration in Ireland and beyond
In the wake of recent #StormEowyn, which brought unprecedented wind speeds and widespread disruption across Ireland, we held this webinar on #forests recovery and #restoration to find answers to these questions: 💭 How can we better deal with future disturbances across European forests? 🌎 How do we transform / adapt our forests to make them more climate resilient? 🌱 What can we learn from past experiences to recover and restore forests in an integrative way? 🔍 What are current preliminary findings on storm damage across different forest types and regions? 💶 How can policy and funding from government and EU support recovery? This webinar is part of SUPERB's Forest Restoration Talks and is hosted in collaboration with the Integrate Network, TRANSFORMIT Project, and FoRISK - Pan-European Forest Risk Facility. Speakers: – Noel Kelly, Irish forest owner majorly affected by storm Éowyn – Christophe Orazio from IEFC (Aquitaine, France) brings in knowledge and expertise on forest risk management and climate change adaptation – Jo O’Hara is a professional Chartered Forester, director of FutureArk Ltd and a non-executive board member of Forestry and Land Scotland. She brings in policy and strategy expertise in relation to change management – Fergus Moore, Head of the Forest Sector Development Division at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine, Ireland – Carolin Stiehl from Wald & Holz NRW brings in expertise in forest management and restoration implications after major forest disturbance.
