The Greek scholar Strabo visited Hierapolis in the first century BCE, and wrote about the frightening properties of its Ploutonion in his Geographica:

“the Ploutonion… is an opening large enough to admit a man, but it reaches a considerable depth…”

Interesting example on how assumptions about people not bathing made people first assume the bath wasn't a bath and then assuming it was built after Roman influence in stead of before.
Also Strabo writing about daily hygiene of these peoples:

Surviving records show a fire started by Julius Caesar's men burning boats in harbor spread to nearby buildings, including warehouse containing books, but no evidence it burned the Mouseion.

Greek geographer Strabo writes of visiting 30 years later to consult the volumes, so it must have survived.

Pompey Strabo executes the rebel leaders of the city, seizes their property, takes a bunch of captives and - the dream of all Roman generals - holds a triumph in Rome.

A grand military parade through the city, displaying the victorious army and the spoils they took. 4/

I’m going to be appropriately normal about today but to give you an example of how bizarre American media was in the long years after it here’s a bunch of gangbangers pantomiming 9/11 to a time-displaced Sarah Connor on the Terminator TV show

The priests made a spectacle of entering the Ploutonion themselves, although it's clear they understood its dangers.

“They hold their breath as much as they can," Strabo tells us. “I could see in their countenances a kind of suffocating attack”

Some #Caturday reading. I know there’s a newer, well regarded translation of Strabo out now, but I’ve never fully read this Cambridge edition and figured I should before buying another one.
