Anyone who thinks the NYC subways are scary does not ride the NYC subways. Or perhaps hasn't since the 1980s (and even then it wasn't as bad as people claimed).
I cannot emphasize enough that the New York City subway is not scary. It’s one of my favorite parts of living here. I grew up in the suburbs having to drive on highways everywhere and that’s way scarier

These two - subways and libraries - on the top of my list as well.
I think of the New York City subway as a civic miracle. I put libraries in this category too.
the congestion pricing backlash + constant misplaced concerns about subway safety really bums me out as someone who thinks the nyc subway system is quite simply one of the most amazing feats of the modern era

Europeans don't need ugly American cars. They have governments that are forward-thinking, which provide buses, subways, and high-speed trains, unlike America, which would rather order another aircraft carrier it doesn't need than help its citizens get to work.
