Worked a bit on the weekend, worked a bit some evenings, and finished my 500+ scripts of marking this morning!!!

So of course took a long lunch hour to my happy place (flexibility *is* one of the good things about my job). Resulting pictures below! (+2 from my walk to work yesterday)

Good weather flicked back on for today, so off to Zealandia!

Saw something today I'd not seen before: face-off between tieke and hihi on the forest floor (both eventually gave up and ended up sharing the space).

Tīeke | saddleback are members of the wattlebird family, endemic to New Zealand, along with the extinct huia, endangered north island kōkako, and the (possibly also extinct) south island kōkako. All have been significantly impacted by the arrival of humans and the mammals that came with them.

Finished teaching yesterday, so took today off to make a long weekend. Gorgeous weather so, very on brand, headed off to Zealandia. And boy did the tieke play ball today.

(Also some other nice shots included (particularly like the piwakawaka and the gecko), but the tieke were today's stars).

Love these!! I am quite in love with the tieke at Zealandia

Tieke are very generous in letting themselves be seen. They're less generous in sitting bloody still long enough to get a decent shot. Was lucky enough to get the second part yesterday.

Tieke are usually quite difficult to photograph; they're pretty skittish. Much more obliging - in better light! - than usual today.

Zealandia today.

Got some great shots (those tieke and tui ones in particular). *Lots* of kaka around the place. Part of it is spring, but I also think taking the feeders away mean they are more widely distributed across the valley.

I don't know... but are you the one who loves Tīeke? Because if so, did you see my video last week?

here is my election manifesto:
1) fix all the broken things
2) make things fair again
3) build systems which limit the harm selfish, greedy, cruel people can do
4) a silica gel sachet in every lunchbox
5) pass a piece of legislation gives everyone a siesta
6) make Tieke bird of the year

The tūī caught my eye initially, and I also love the tīeke. It would be a gift for my brother who lives overseas now but loves Aotearoa's birds.

In Māori mythology, the orange mark was caused when Māui asked the bird to fetch him some water but the bird pretended not to have heard him. Consequently, Māui grabbed the tīeke and scorched the feathers of its back.

The name means ‘wattled honeyeater-starling’, but it’s not in either of those families - the New Zealand Wattlebirds are their own thing and endemic to the country.

First described in 1832 by the French zoologist Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire.

AKA tīeke, from one of the birds calls.

Going out to maintain my bait and trap line later today. I don't save these beauties but guess what, tīeke/saddlebacks dip into West Auckland from Tiritiri Mātangi, Auckland Zoo, Shakespear Bay and Tāwharanui now. one was killed by a roaming domestic cat recently
