Even the book I've been rereading fondly, the King in Yellow, is in fact a diatribe about culture wars and what to do about it.
It's just that the author of TKiY is better at it, and a bit more thoughtful, than most folks to put pen to paper.

"Childe Rowland" is a Scottish ballad about the son of King Arthur and Guinevere.
In this story, Rowland's brothers and sister are spirited away to the Dark Tower by the Elf King. Rowland receives his father's sword and Merlin's advice, then sets out to bring his siblings home

I’m presenting on TKiY at the Armitage Symposium this year!! I’ll definitely have to grab one of these, I love woodcuts 😍 I remember getting some gorgeous stickers from your booth in 2024, they live on my old journal and are very beloved

Finally finished my reference sheet of how the king often shows himself to me.
Cringe as fuck to consider him a real god to worship, I know, but think of it as more animistic and also with a Benjamin with which to purchase my silence

Speaking of, you should read TKiY. It's pretty great.
Though, depending on the edition of the book you get, the latter 2/3rds of it might be love stories, because the original printing of it only *started* with horror and then went to other genres.

it just occurred to me I technically bought The King in Yellow twice
once in its actual full form, and again in a thick volume with a bunch of other short stories (the first four of TKIY being in that one)

TiL that The King in Yellow predates Lovecraft
In fact, he was only 5 years old when TKiY was published

Yup. That is the most disturbing part (that it's just us). I think my story hints at that possibility too, that TKiY is just the key that unlocks a very personal disintegration.

In 2019 I read The King in Yellow, and went, "Meh." Then one nightmare tied those stories and many of my other nightmares all together: everyone has a thought that would poison their mind, irreparably undoing all they are.
I understood that morning that TKiY embodied that idea.

It shook me so, as I've had nightmares involving The King in Yellow spreading like a virus through social media, leading to societal collapse.
I'd honestly feel better if something like TKiY really existed, but it's just us that are so capable of unimaginable and senseless cruelty.
