Quite the landscape. I've put a lot of time into understanding it. This is my version of cat pictures and pretty sunsets

Those depressions trap surface runoff, limiting erosion of the tableland margins, and enhancing tableland persistence. We support this model with subsurface data, terrain analysis (some of it shown here), and numerical modeling with the Landlab toolkit. 3/5

Nevertheless, I decided to leave this out of my first lecture in geomorphology, in favor of a loess tableland and videos of saltating sand on a dune
Is there a more impressive drumlinized landscape than this? Between Columbus and Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Green Bay Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Sentinel 2, Jan 9, 2025, and 1 m lidar. Smaller squares in image are 1/2 X 1/2 mile. US Hwy 151 runs almost parallel to ice flow here.

Thanks to
@poetrylondon.bsky.social for publishing my poem En la Meseta / On the Tableland in their Autumn Issue.

It’s always such a treat to see the two versions appear side by side, letting readers experience the poem in both Spanish and English 💛💚

Happy (in spite of everything) to share our new paper on loess tablelands, mesa-like landforms of highly erodible sediment, that persist without a resistant caprock for tens of thousands of years, if not longer. Why? 1/5 agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
Evolution of Loess Tablelands in the Central Great Plains: Relief Generation by Loess Accumulation and the Importance of Closed Depressions
Loess tableland evolution reflects the interaction of loess accumulation generating relief and erosion in response to that relief Tableland erosion using fluvial processes is limited by closed de...

A loess tableland eroding from the inside out. If it's not immediately clear, look at the drainage network in the center of the image. The drainage divide around it is close to dissected margins of the tableland on all sides. Central Loess Plateau south of Luochuan, China. Sentinel 1 SAR image.

Persistence of depression-covered tablelands leads to long-term storage of sediment within them, along with organic carbon in buried soils found beneath tableland summits but not elsewhere in the landscape. More papers coming soon on those buried soils. Research supported by NSF. 5/5
