Let's meet my friend Tanystropheus, a archosauromorph reptile from the Triassic.

You may notice that Tany is looooooooong, with some specimens being 6 m (20 ft) long, while only weighing 30-70 kg (65-150 lbs).

Which led me to an interesting question:
How do LONG-NECKERS like Tany BREATHE?
A silhouette outline of a human in black with three putative species of Tanystropheus shown in shades of purple. They're VERY long-necked lizards with small feet/hands, and moderate tails. "Size comparison of large specimens of three species of Tanystropheus (T. 'conspicuus' , T. hydroides, T. longobardicus) with a human for reference. Tanystropheus is an extremely long-necked Triassic reptile that was initially mistaken for a pterosaur. But what if that mistake wasn't as mistakey as we thought? Here's 2 Tanystropheus longobardicus using their neck membranes cooperatively to hunt fish while in flight!

In fact, the model best supported by Tany's body-shape is the giraffe model: tidal breathing with narrow trachea & giant lungs that only contract a few times a minute.

The most unique adaptation is the lung shape: 'multicameral', with many lobes each working in parallel to move air.

Mesozoic March 1 | Tanystropheus

I should've made the neck longer but I'm a amateur, this challenge is a learning experience for me :)

Digital Illustration of a tanystropheus floating over a purple to blue gradient rectangle on an off white background. Tanystropheus is a long-necked triassic reptile, with short, splayed legs and a disproportionately long neck. The drawing is stylized, putting bends in the longer extremities. Its head faces left, its body gathered beneath it to form a reverse C shape. In the bottom right corner is a watermark reading: “LEAVES AND INKS”

Imagine a Tanystropheus gets into a cartoon fight and when the little puff of smoke goes away his neck is tied in a knot like a big pretzel and he goes "aw not agaaain"
An illustration of what the prehistoric lizard Tanystropheus is believed to look like, a pretty standard lizard body with a tiny head and a neck about twice the length of the body.
