#Tectonism
As we wrap up the year, I'm sharing an achievement I'm particularly proud of—we published the second book in our Comparative Planetology series!

Planetary Tectonism deals with the stresses that shape planets and the landforms that develop.

It follows Planetary Volcanism, published in 2021.

New paper alert!

tl;dr: the seafloor of Europa is probably tectonically inert, meaning little to no active fracturing that could expose fresh rock to seawater.

Without such water–rock reactions the prospect for there being life within Europa just took a big hit.

A thread:

I'm so proud. The tectonism session has been consistently full the entire afternoon. People obviously do like their crust deformed! #LPSC2025

The Moon was tectonically active as recently as 770 million years ago - when life on Earth was unicellular.

Age dating, geometry and movement direction of a 411 km long lunar lobate scarp complex: Evidence of recent tectonism on the far side of the moon
Pristine lobate scarps on the Moon are young thrust faults that were formed in response to global contraction. These provide important insights into t…

From the last few threads you've probably noticed that most lakes are somehow related to tectonism--generally true except at high northern & southern latitudes where the glacial-interglacial cycle dominates--ice sheets force the crust to bend downward, forming lakes after the ice melts away.

Another chapter of my dissertation is out in @palaeo-electronica.bsky.social! We assembled a large ecomorphological dataset of Cenozoic rodents from Asia and compared diversity before and after major tectonic/climate events. Check it out! palaeo-electronica.org/content/2026...

Do you like Mercury? Tectonism? Or maps? Then you need to check out MerCatSS! Hannes Bernhardt will chat more about our global shortening structure map during the a tectonics session this afternoon and we have stickers to hand out. #LPSC2025 #MerCatSS #mercury

First up, a deceptively simple yet elegant map from Alabama. Beautiful, textbook thrust fault geometry from Byerly's "Geology of the Rodentown 7.5-minute quadrangle, DeKalb, Etowah, and Marshall Counties, Alabama" Geological Survey of Alabama Quad Series #82. Just a wonderful slice of tectonism!

New argument against Snow Ball Earth having been the cause of the global Great Unconformaty where some erosive process stripped much of the pre-Cambrian sedimentary record away.

Instead, these authors suggest the formation of a supercontinent (Columbia) was the cause.

really rad study came out recently showing that carbon flux OUT of rocks during weathering may exceed carbon sequestration IN rocks during silicate weather, suggesting a long-term and large-scale influence of tectonism in global carbon cycles. super cool!

Isolated from the manipulating hand of life, the landscapes of these barren worlds are shaped only by the forces of nature: volcanism, erosion, tectonism, and gravity. The great mountains and valleys and windswept dunes that cover the surface preserve a rich geologic history of its formation.

Four hour video about online plagiarism? You are like a little baby. How about 2+ hours about “tectonism” by Parametric Patrik instead. Why is he dressed like Falco? Not for me to say.

This tectonism 1) buried the comparatively young Miocene sediments deep enough to get hot enough to form oil and gas and 2) formed structures (faults, anticline folds, also erosional surfaces and other truncations of different rock formations) that could trap the oil.

Having the tectonic maps in my head, every time I see those continent maps in geography textbooks, it is a bit irritating. There is an annoying bit of Eurocentrism in Europe being marked as a separate continent from Asia, but India not. ⚒️

The Great Unconformity, a pronounced break in the geological record—famously visible at the Grand Canyon—is likely due to deep erosion associated with tectonism rather than “snowball Earth” ice sheets, according to data from North China. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/ZHCJ50YmYZb
