Pablo Picasso :
The Bird Cage, 1944

Oil on canvas | 55 × 46 cm

Created during the final months of the German occupation of Paris.

Further description in the alt text 👇
While firmly rooted in late Cubism through its use of fragmented, abstract figures and sharp geometric shapes, the composition also displays strong Surrealist and Expressionist influences. This is evident in its dreamlike, highly symbolic interpretation of space and objects. The Dora Maar Portraiture: Many art historians and critics interpret the abstract, angular figures interacting with the cage as a heavily stylized portrait of Dora Maar. Maar—an accomplished photographer and artist—was Picasso's primary muse, companion, and intellectual peer throughout this dark and tumultuous era. Symbolism of Confinement: Painted in 1944, the structural framework of the bird cage serves as a heavy, multi-layered metaphor. It captures the literal isolation and entrapment felt under the Nazi occupation of France, while simultaneously mirroring the personal emotional tension and claustrophobia defining Picasso and Maar's deteriorating relationship. Note on Distinct Works: This 1944 piece should not be confused with Picasso's earlier, much larger composition The Bird Cage (1923), which resides in a private collection and features an entirely different layout incorporating a piano.

With my 2026 art series completed, I’m shifting from high detail, busy compositions, to a bit of abstract minimalism.

Ricardo Martínez de Hoyos (October 28, 1918 – January 11, 2009) was a Mexican painter noted for his figurative work on unreal atmospheres. He was one of several children from a very large family to make a mark in his field, along with Oliverio in sculpture and Jorge in acting. His work was exhibited in various parts of the world, featured in collective tours of Mexican art. Individually, he exhibited mostly in Mexico including important venues such as the Museo de Arte Moderno and the Palacio de Bellas Artes, which held a tribute to the artist in 1994. Since his death, a cultural center named after him has been established in the historic center of Mexico City.
