I suppose massively manufactured teen pop wouldn’t really notice the difference but come on people’s tastes in music are so varied and most people avoid teenpop when they grow up anyway. There are people still only listening to the tunes they liked in their 20’s now at 60, AI music & film will fail

Pink: "Don't Let Me Get Me"
USA 2002
I confess I forgot Pink co-wrote the foundational text of (explicitly) confessional teenpop with… Dallas Austin. Remember, you never have to hand it to Linda Perry (except for "Get the Party Started")

It needs re-mapping! I wrote that in the weird interregnum before Taylor Swift took over the entirety of the teenpop landscape (including Radio Disney) less than a year later. (That's what the newsletter series I linked is about.)

Speaking of risky production decisions that somehow worked a charm; swapping the bridge for a skit, embracing the video-centric nature of teenpop of #TheN0ughtie5.
Helps that either side of it you have the Max Martin machine going fucking brrr.

Still wild that lite FM inspirational pop—which was understood, in the 90s, to be for adult office workers stuck in boring tedium—somehow became the sound of 00s mainstream pop for actual youths. (Related to @otherdavemoore.com ‘s “teenpop is just adult contemporary” theorem.)

especially since Robyn & Britney and the boy bands who were core to the late 90s teenpop wave already had a VERY heavy R&B and new Jack swing influence, just filtered slightly through Max Martin & Cheiron Studios.

“Wannabe” works for the late ’90s on so many levels—it anticipates the teenpop boom & also the moment millennial-generation fandom takes over from GenX. To me hip-hop in the ’90s is basically a constant—gangsta in early ’90s, flossy/Puffy-driven in late ’90s. “Wannabe” captures an aesthetic pivot.
