#The Teachings of Mutton:
I picked up a history of the Coast Salish Woolly Dog. It's always hard reading these because the whole time you have this big empty space. A void of experience, knowledge, practice and memory that's gone forever.

I just found this. I’ve been waiting for it to come out for a while. This wooly dog is extinct as I understand it.

A wonderful review of The Teachings of Mutton appears in the spring issue of BC Studies: "By presenting multiple voices rather than a single authoritative narrative, the book disrupts the structure of academic authorship itself."

“On the shores of the Pacific Northwest, Coast Salish people bred, raised and sheared these dogs, using their woolly hair to weave blankets that were at once practical and symbolically and culturally significant.”

Sadly extinct.

I should go see this. More people should know about the Salish Woolly Dog, a breed they kept for its wool. Sadly the breed is extinct, but the traditions of spinning wool and weaving live on. I highly recommend this book if you're curious 🧶

“Mutton’s pelt has acted like a teacher,” Hammond-Kaarremaa finishes. “His teachings have revealed so much, to so many people – not only about dog wool and woolly dog DNA and diet, not only about blankets and weaving and spinning, but about the enduring strength of oral history.”
