Theileria, the latest cattle concern, detected in Nebraskan feedlots and breeding herds
It’s been a hard year for cattle farmers, as wildfires, drought and disease impact herds. The latest concern is Theileria, a tick-borne disease detected in imported Nebraska cattle. In May, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture urged cattle ranchers to be vigilant in watching for Theileria symptoms after the disease was detected in 10 feedlots and three breeding herds in the state. The last reported case of the disease in Nebraska was in July 2025. Theileria is caused by the Asian longhorned tick, found most commonly on the East Coast. The tick has not been found in Nebraska, but symptoms of the condition have been reported in imported cattle. The disease can be potentially spread by reusing needles with an infected animal or through other blood-sucking organisms such as lice. Symptoms include anemia, jaundice, loss of appetite, exercise intolerance, weakness, and in some cases, the disease can be fatal. With the high cost of importing cattle, morbidity and mortality rates can possibly affect profitability of a pen of cattle. Reynolds, who has 31 years of cattle veterinary experience, said prevention for the disease is no different than any other disease. Through biosecurity, ranchers can prevent the spread of the disease by...

Always happy to be involved in work that better explains how parasite cells function. Especially in a group like apicomplexans with such a global health impact (Malaria, Theileria, Cryptosporidium).

The more we know, the better people are able to find ways to combat them.

Prevalence and molecular characterization of Theileria sp. from endangered Arabian ...
Wildlife conservation in Saudi Arabia is gaining much attention from the authorities. Habitat destruction, climate change, and human encroachment, as well as disease outbreaks, negatively impact conservation efforts. Hemoparasites among endangered Saudi wildlife have not been studied before. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of hemoparasites among two endangered gazelle species, Gazella marica (Reem) and Gazella arabica (Idmi), raised at King Khalid Wildlife Research Center (KKWRC) for breeding and reintroduction purposes. A total of 233 blood samples were collected from the jugular veins of gazelles and examined microscopically for the detection of piroplasm or any relevant blood parasites. Ticks were collected from some gazelles at KKWRC to identify them and see their potential role in the transmission of hemoparasites. DNA was extracted from the collected blood and ticks for the detection of hemoparasites and amplified, targeting the partial 18S rRNA gene. The prevalence of intraerythrocytic bodies suggestive of Theileria sp. was detected in 41 (17.9%) gazelles of both species, whereas PCR products of Theileria sp. DNA was detected in 65 (27.9%) gazelles. The sensitivity of the molecular technique compared to the direct microscopy was 76.74%, whereas the specificity was 83.16%. Ticks were morphologically identified as Hyalomma impeltatum and confirmed...
