In Totonac culture, the primary god of death and the underworld is Mictlantecuhtli (also known as the Lord of the Dead or the other life). Vanilla was a sacred orchid from tropical forests in Mexico. The Totonac people of Veracruz were the first to harvest it. When the Spanish took it to Europe in the 1500s, no one could grow it, the plant bloomed, but never fruited. The secret? A tiny bee native to Mexico that pollinated the orchId.
