The subject of my postgraduate dissertation was: “Translation doesn’t exist - what a Translator does is Transcreation.” To clarify- translating something word for word really doesn’t work as meaning, nuance, register can be lost. Google translate will never replace me!
To anyone who needs it today: credit your translator. A good translator's skills are at least as important as those of the original creator. Imagine if someone were to build a life sized replica of the Eiffel Tower out of matchsticks, you wouldn't just credit Gustave Eiffel - would you?

Raise your hand if AI has made your work harder. I'll go first. I do periodic copywriting/editing translation/transcreation, and the new work platform uses AI to produce an always-wrong rationale for any change. It's quite slow, but I have to wait for it to be wrong before I can type over it.

I would argue that adding/removing characters from the story is actually (obviously?) too far, but the extremeness of these particular translations is a good jumping off point for considering the finer details of transcreation.
