The paintings in Brooke Pickett's new series for Prospect.6, What To Eat, What To Drink, What To Leave For Poison, are inspired by Camille T. Dungy's collection of poetry (Red Hen Press: 2006) of the same name (used with Dungy's permission). Pickett also looked to off-the-grid survivalist guides as well as Catharine Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe's nineteenth-century treatise on homemaking for women, American Woman's Home. Her paintings' titles, including Retrofitted and A Powerful Transmitter hint at utilitarian, survivalist aspects of homebuilding. Created after becoming a mother and losing her home during Hurricane Ida, Pickett's paintings offer a meditation on personal items that can make a place feel like home— a velvet pillow, a child's hair barrettes, or a lace curtain-even in cases when home has been relocated. #art
