New paper led by @metalichen.bsky.social from our group presenting a chromosome-level assembly of the Trebouxia photobiont alga from the lichen Xanthoria parietina - a resource we hope will enable significant new insight into the symbiosis @newphyt.bsky.social doi.org/10.1111/nph....

Some nice close-ups of that beautiful green Xanthoria parietina. On a wet and shady stile in Dorset. #lichen

We compared the genome to another high-quality assembly of Trebouxia made by the Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics project (who btw are releasing very nice genomes from various lichens!) 3/5

Xanthoria parietina, usually bright yellow, appears green in shady conditions because it reduces production of its yellow UV-protective pigment (parietin), allowing its green algal partner (Trebouxia) to show through. On a wet stile in Dorset. #lichen

After 3 months on and Erasmus scholarship Veronika Veselá will go home to her host institution Charles University in Prague.
She did such an amazing job in assembling 11 genomes of Trebouxia and Asterochlorix and creating high quality assemblies based on long reads.

We will miss you Veronika!

29) Green algae Trebouxia is a common lichen component; it doesn’t reproduce sexually. It produces zoospores that can migrate within a lichen

3/4 In recent genomic studies the photobiont has been identified as as Asterochloris sp. of the Trebouxia group of green symbiotic alga. Cladonia rangiformis produces mats of "lichen heath" at several of Sussex's areas of vegetated shingle - this specimen was at Tide Mills Newhaven, East Sussex

As promised I took a small sample form the emerald green material on the poplar trunk for microscopy. I missed my post yesterday evening (too tired) - but here it is.
The emerald green stuff is... stuff. I guess some pigment?

Also some green algae present (Trebouxia sp.?).

☀️ RESEARCH ☀️

The most common lichen photobiont genus, Trebouxia, exhibits highly species-specific responses to high light conditions, indicating the complexity of the mechanisms these organisms use to withstand stress - Poquita-Du et al.

30) Trebouxia shows evidence of at least 3 horizontal gene transfer events—protein-encoding genes that were inserted into algal genome from the fungal partner, most likely via a virus
