Another common misconception: iPhones don't have "LiDAR" sensors in front.

The Face ID / TrueDepth camera is a standard infrared camera using SLS (structured light sensing).

In other words, it's a miniature Kinect 1.

Apple bought the company that built Kinect 1 to build this!

The whole thing about iPhones being superior for tracking due to the TrueDepth camera is A MYTH!

Try it out yourself: cover up the IR camera while using VTS tracking. It makes little to no difference.

iPhone tracking is just webcam tracking with better software!

Here's whats coming soon to SelfReflect! Rewrote most of the iOS code to make this happen, but these extra blendshapes were like the #1 requested feature.

Mixing native truedepth tracking alongside the Snap full body tracking was no simple task. And the new camera renderer means higher FPS!

iPhone 18 Pro Leak Adds New Evidence for Under-Display Face ID
iPhone 18 Pro Leak Adds New Evidence for Under-Display Face ID
Apple is actively testing under-screen Face ID for next year's iPhone 18 Pro models using a special "spliced micro-transparent glass" window built into the display, claims a Chinese leaker. According to "Smart Pikachu," a Weibo account that has previously shared accurate supply-chain details on Chinese Android hardware, Apple is testing the special glass as a way to let the TrueDepth system's infrared sensors pass through the panel without distortion. The approach is similar to existing industry techniques that use micro-perforated or nano-patterned glass to selectively improve IR transmission in a localized region above the sensor array. The report also suggests Apple's work has already prompted related suppliers to accelerate preparation for potential production. There have been several rumors suggesting the iPhone 18 Pro models will include under-display Face ID, but some disagreement over whether we'll see the technology in 2026. A May report by The Information claimed that iPhone 18 Pro models will have no Dynamic Island with just a pinhole cutout located at the upper left of the display, but other rumors suggest there's still going to be a Dynamic Island. Analyst Ross Young said that the iPhone 18 Pro models could have under-display Face ID, but that doesn't mean there won't be no Dynamic Island at all. Instead, the pill-shaped hole will be smaller. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has also spoken of a slimmed down Dynamic Island for the iPhone 18 Pro models. The new claim of a micro-transparent glass window supports the view that there will be a smaller Dynamic Island that shifts TrueDepth sensing components below the screen while retaining a smaller cutout for the front camera. While Smart Pikachu does not specifically mention the Pro models, supply-chain sources often use "series" loosely when discussing early panel and materials testing, and all previous rumors have related to Apple's high-end models. Apple is expected to release the iPhone 18 Pro models in September, alongside an all-new foldable iPhone, as part of a new split cycle launch. The regular iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e are not expected to debut until early 2027.Related Roundup: iPhone 18Tag: Smart PikachuRelated Forum: iPhone This article, "iPhone 18 Pro Leak Adds New Evidence for Under-Display Face ID" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

Since I broke the TrueDepth camera on my phone, I stopped using Face ID and of course as a result I became unbearably righteous about facial recognition and privacy LOL anyways, I'm reading this great article by @lukestark.bsky.social today!! firstmonday.org/ojs/index.ph...

Apple 'Repair Assistant' Mac Tool Coming to macOS Tahoe
Apple 'Repair Assistant' Mac Tool Coming to macOS Tahoe
Apple is expanding its Repair Assistant calibration software to Mac computers with the upcoming macOS Tahoe 26 release, following its rollout to iPhone and iPad last year. On iPhone, the tool helps calibrate replacement parts including back glass, battery, display, TrueDepth camera, and rear camera components. On Mac, Repair Assistant will enable Touch ID and Lid Angle sensors to be reused after Display or Logic Board repairs on select models. Touch ID sensors will use Activation Lock for protection. macOS Tahoe and Apple silicon are required by the utility. Users can access Repair Assistant through System Settings ➝ General ➝ About, where a "Parts & Service" section appears after recognized repairs. Apple plans to make genuine Mac parts available to independent repair professionals through MobileSentrix and Mobileparts.shop later this year. The update supports the company's Self Service Repair program by allowing previously replaced, uncalibrated parts to meet Apple's reliability standards. Apple says macOS Tahoe will officially launch on September 15.Related Roundup: macOS Tahoe 26Related Forum: macOS Tahoe This article, "Apple 'Repair Assistant' Mac Tool Coming to macOS Tahoe" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

Foldable iPhone's Under-Screen Camera Likely Won't Include Face ID
Foldable iPhone's Under-Screen Camera Likely Won't Include Face ID
Apple's rumored foldable iPhone currently in development features an under-screen camera integrated into the folding display, but the module is unlikely to include TrueDepth components that make up Face ID. That's according to Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station who has sources within the Chinese supply chain. On Monday, the leaker revealed the alleged screen resolutions for the 7.76-inch inner display and the 5.49-inch outer display of Apple's book-style foldable device, and they also claimed that the inner display uses "under-screen camera technology." However, it was not clear whether this meant the TrueDepth system that underlies Face ID would be integrated beneath the screen along with the selfie camera. The latest tidbit of information clears this up, and suggests that the display will have a single punch-hole camera. It also aligns with industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's claim that Apple's foldable iPhone will forgo Face ID authentication, instead using a Touch ID side button as a means to save precious internal space. Apple already integrates Touch ID into the side button on some iPads, so there's precedent for this. Integrating Face ID under the screen is difficult because the core components that make up the TrueDepth camera system – like the dot projector and infrared camera – need a clear, unobstructed view to accurately scan your face. Current display layers block or distort infrared light, which degrades the system's ability to create a secure 3D facial map. Fully under-display Face ID will remain a technical hurdle until displays can transmit infrared light cleanly. Apple will launch its long-rumored foldable iPhone late next year with a ~$2,000 premium price tag attached, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. I believe, iPhone's TrueDepth is closer to structured light, but the point remains that it relies on active light source, not just passively watching with cameras.

There are also some time-of-flight cameras out there, like Kinect and some android phones.
