Sir Edward Leigh chaired the committee that hunts government waste for nine years, and takes no paid outside work. He also voted twice this year against scrapping the two-child limit. It passed anyway, 361 to 84. Our verdict: "Even the good news is only a smaller loss." #UKPolitics #TwoChildLimit

Widespread ignorance of the impact of Tory (now Labour's) #TwoChildLimit / #RapeClause

But let's say you have a wife, 4 kids & a good job then are suddenly made redundant

Or you are a mother with 4 kids forced to flee an abusive relationship taking them with you

Then you will find out.....

For years, this limit has pushed struggling families into hardship. Ending it would bring us closer to a fairer system that supports every child. #ChildPoverty #TwoChildLimit (2/2)

“Scrapping the #twochildlimit IS a moral victory” — but new data from DWP shows nearly 1 in 3 children in the #NorthEast are still growing up in poverty.

Progress matters. But the system is still leaving families without enough to get by.

Poverty in the UK is not inevitable but as a result of political choices has been built into the design of our social security system.

New child poverty figures for the #NorthEast are devastating, even if not surprising.

Removing the #twochildlimit was long overdue, but these levels of poverty show how far there is to go.

We see this every day: impossible budgets, constant pressure, and too little to get by.
🚸 New data published by the Department for Work and Pensions today shows that almost 1️⃣ in 3️⃣ (30%) babies, children and young people across the North East were growing up in poverty in 2024/25.

The #twochildlimit doesn’t reflect real life. It doesn’t account for rising prices, reduced income during maternity leave, or the cost of caring for young children. It doesn’t care whether a family is working, budgeting, or doing everything right. Sadly, Paula's story isn't rare.

Some powerful statements in this article

“Taking money from families with three or more children does not increase their employment rate nor its intensity, neither does it reduce fertility among poorer households”

Women who conceived through abuse—coercion, rape—told today by the courts that the law can't protect them. The two-child cap is already cruel. But this? This is inhumane. Survivors deserve dignity, not bureaucracy. #RapeClause #TwoChildLimit #EndTheCap" #WelfareReform #FuckStarmer #UKPolitics

Great news! Labour has officially removed the two child limit, helping over 3,850 children in Lewisham East. 🎉
Opposing this policy was one of the reasons I entered politics. I’ll keep fighting to ensure vulnerable children are properly supported.
