purely theoretically, Th breeder fuel cycle (Th232 -> Pa233 β-decay -> U233 which you fission) you could use U233 for a bomb... if it wasn't for the fact it's a horrible choice compared to just centrifuging regular U.

But MSRs can actually burn up weapons/waste grade Pu!
bsky.app/profile/snep...
"enabling simpler weapons that are more easily constructed" is doing some incredibly heavy lifting (U232 contamination -> decay to Tl208 which throws some absolutely heinous radiation)

there's a reason that route was not explored with gusto by the soviets/americans and they stuck with U/Pu

I should actually explain this: U233 is a fissile product of neutron activation of thorium. By having thorium in or around a nuclear reactor, you "breed" U233, which can be separated chemically, yielding the pure fissile uranium, unmixed with U238 and requiring no enrichment for weaponization.

Olemme D Hahnin hengessä käyttäneet amerikiumia ja itsevalaisevista sitisenin rannekelloista saatua radiumia alfalähteenä. Alfasäteily kohdistettiin naapurin foliopipoon ja irronneet neutronit muutti toriumytimiä U233:ksi. Toriumia saatiin papan vanhasta petrolilampusta. ⚗️🐶😺🐭🌚🤚🏼

🧵 The widespread deployment of the Thorium-U233 fuel cycle especially when combined with molten salt reactors would be a serious setback to global weapons nonproliferation achievements with no net benefit over the U-Pu cycle.
"Uranium 233 has a lower critical mass, which means that less material can be used to build a weapon. And compared with weapons-grade plutonium 239, uranium 233 has a much lower spontaneous fission rate, enabling simpler weapons that are more easily constructed." #Thorium
Thorium power has a protactinium problem
Protactinium’s distinctive chemistry could make thorium reactors less resistant to nuclear weapons proliferation than their proponents believe.

Complete the effect by using U233 for budget friendly nukes

Nope. Reactor technology is pretty well-understood. The first US commercial reactor used thorium!

There are some disadvantages, mostly that one needs to "breed" the thorium into U233. So once-through uranium fuel cycles won because, for now, uranium is cheap and plentiful.

"In the case of the molten-salt U233 breeder reactor, it was proposed to have continual chemical processing of a stream of liquid fuel. Such an arrangement also offers a way to completely bypass the U232 contamination problem bc 27d half-life Pa233 could be separated out before it decays into U233."

I thought that they still had thorium reserves but maybe it’s just U233 bred from the thorium chain.

Biggest risk is apparently the U233 weapons proliferation problem. (You can make a bomb out of U233. It's fiddly and dangerous to work with, but you can do it (Operation Teapot): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium-233

Our ARTEM tool for #RNA #3D #motif search does not rely on annotated pairwise interactions. It could identify a D-loop/T-loop-like motif with 2 non-interacting pyrimidines (U206/U233, right) instead of the characteristic long-range base pair (left).

Kirk Sorensen covers the American Nuclear Society's recent policy statement on Uranium-233. It specifically mentions the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment as a successful use of U233 -- one that would justify the retention and preservation of our existing U233 stockpile. 1/2

U233 would be a perfectly acceptable material for a dirty bomb

Seems like every few days someone is claiming this time, Thorium reactor will really really work (pump enough energy in it converts to U233, which is pretty dodgy to handle). Got one of my first reporting breaks pointing out how hard this tech is to work.

"U233 has been shown to be highly satisfactory as a weapons material."

"If today's weapons were based upon U233, LRL [Lawrence Radiation Laboratory] would have no interest in switching to plutonium."

Also, in a setting that uses U233 (the main fuel produced from Thorium) they'll have excess amounts of U232, 234, 35, and 36 from alternate neutron absorptions, as well as stable production of Plutonium 238 through 242 with increasing levels of difficulty.

Need to evaluate all of them in turn,
