UUIDv7 library v0.6.0 released for #elixirlang

Updated to use increased clock precision instead of a randomly-seeded counter, to match implementation merged into Postgres.

starting a single-issue advocacy PAC for issuing every american a UUIDv7
I have a number of hobby horses but one of them is “name matching sucks” and if you disagree it’s because you’ve never tried to use names as an identifier
Birthdate and name matches are causing US Citizens to get arrested in error by ICE as they board airplanes.

This is the same level of rigor they're bringing to claims of fraudulent voting, and is obvious as an error-prone method to anyone who has taken an introductory stats class.

🚨 New blog alert:
Postgres 18 beta 1 was released last week, and includes native support for UUIDv7.
Great opportunity to explain why UUIDv7 is a great fit for your database keys, and show you how to use them in PG18.

PostgreSQL 18 is here 🎉 🐘
• Async I/O (io_uring/worker), faster reads
• More index hits (skip scan, OR)
• uuidv7(), virtual generated cols
• OAuth2;
Ask for Xata access and try PostgreSQL 18.

New short blog post, touching on how I'd redesign UUIDv7 to keep the database performance benefits while mitigating most of the downsides.

Short version: replace unix_ms with H(unix_ms, unix_ms >> 13 | salt).

Did you know that UUIDv7 is also supported by Python 3.14?

I along with my colleague Alexander Fridriksson are diving into some of the new features in #postgres18. We just released our look at UUIDv7.

Ran into a nice surprise while looking at Postgres' UUIDv7 patch, which is that it guarantees monotonic incrementation on a per-backend basis.

Last writing of 2024: UUIDv7 monotonicity, how it works, and why it's great for writing tests. Happy NY!

ON THE OTHER HAND, being able to make REST requests, with the server doing live-transcoding of data to JSON (the devices don't know REST/JSON), so you can make curl requests against your embedded devices (including historical data), without knowing the schema as a consumer, is EXTREMELY cool:

Anyone smart want to code-review my update to UUIDv7 library for #elixirlang?

I've redone it to match the updates to the Postgres implementation.

Postgres 18.0 was just released!

What does it mean for Oban? Glad you asked:

- Asynchronous I/O for improved scans
- Skip scans for multi-column B-Tree indexes
- Parallel builds of GIN indexes
- Improved vacuum strategy
- Many optimizer improvements
- Native UUIDv7 data type

UUIDv7 is like IPv6 in that it is better in all respects, but people just can't be damned

If only you picked UUIDv7 instead of UUIDv4, then they'd be timestamp sortable

Postgres 18. uuidv7() applied as a new PK column default. Inserts at 2-10K calls/minute. Inserts total time dropped from 1 millisecond to around 50 microseconds, about ~20x faster. Thanks to Postgres developers for this work which enables PK index maintenance to be much more efficient!
