Two more books I highly recommend (my library had them):

1. "Ultralearning" by Scott H. Young
2. "Rewire" by Nicole Vignola

TL;DR: Adults have mostly learned how to learn. Metalearning (metacognition) can be used to our advantage. Also, focus and active learning beats passive exposure..

I keep meaning to post about the reticular activating system (RAS) and how it can boost #LanguageLearning as an adult & compensate for declining BDNF that makes kids' brains language sponges🧽

Hint: Know how you can hear a new word (or name) and then all of a sudden see it everywhere? 1/

How to learn/retain new vocab: Use them! For flashcards, put them in sentences, ideally with audio/pics if you can. Write/Journal with them. Chat with others/native speakers using them. Read materials with that type of vocab. Anything where you put them into action. :) 💪

With 23 days left til Japan, I've set a mini Ultralearning project for myself:
• 50 study hours between now and then
• Hyper focus on directness and drills of my weakest areas (namely: grammar, then vocab)
• Paired with as much immersion as I can fit

A Texas Nomad #24 is live. Forget side gigs. Vibe Coding is how nomads really find freedom.

I ditched the LEGOs and coded WhereBot. Tiny tool. Punk rock code. Ultralearning.

Stop drifting. Build something.
Issue 24 is up.

The first sentence in my post is "They cite studies suggesting…"

There are links to the studies in the article that I took time to summarize.

Also, advice is consistent with what I've read in books by cogitive scientists

1. "Ultralearning" by Scott H. Young
2. "Rewire" by Nicole Vignola

and...
"The ability to think about your thinking to optimize your learning environment is most valuable skill of adult language learners."

1208 minutes so far this month! I've really been picking up steam. My Japanese 🇯🇵 lessons and language exchange were so much smoother, and I'm FINALLY starting to get new grammar stuck in my active memory.

My Ultralearning project has been going well so far!! 🤞🏻

Yes, it is! I would recommend looking into "Deliberate Practice", and also the book "Ultralearning" by Scott Young. But essentially, age doesn't limit learning as much as most people believe. Usually it's time and passion which dwindle affect learning. Compelled to keep practicing from interest

Finished reading both Ultralearning and How To Get Better at Anything by Scott H. Young recently, and I cannot express this enough, it has been instrumental in changing my view of how I'm learning art on my own. Honestly, both are a must-read if you are doing any self-teaching project

At the moment a big math book 😓 but in the category of your book i recommend "ultralearning" or "hyperfocus"

Ever wanted to learn a new skill in a short period of time? Mandarin in 3 months? Being able to paint in a year? Then I suggest Ultralearning by Scott Young. The basic concept is to put yourself in a situation where learning a skill is the everyday focus. #books
