My very cool Fighting Fantasy book did not arrive today, but I did get a reading copy of Blackwater by Michael McDowell.

Speaking of Blackwater, here is my edition. Being such a lovely hardback, it’s too nice to be a reading copy so I’ll either need to get the paperback or suck it up and get the individual volumes (I prefer this cover though).

Today in 2023, Valancourt Books reissued Roland Topor’s out-of-print The Tenant for a new generation. Topor celebrates both the dark & joyful sides of Paris; being here, I can see the diversity he loved: it’s a city of cool public toilet cartoons, Bonbon Bleu ice cream, and kitties in the window 💕

Sucks, but I have to also admit my Valancourt purchases have fallen way off after their reprint heyday

Just saw that Valancourt Books is discontinuing their Paperbacks from Hell imprint, and that’s a major bummer.

Likewise, anyone interested in the Victorian Christmas ghost story tradition should check out any or all of the Valancourt collections. Volume 5 was just closest when I took these pictures.

We're doing Christmas book recommendations in September? One question: what the hell took us so long?

Here are my non-fiction picks (I'm including historical fiction compilations here):

A couple of years ago Valancourt put out a book from an Italian horror author Luigi Musolino, and a number of people I trust really talked it up. So I got a copy and they were right.

And now Earthling has done a lovely limited hardcover of that same collection...

You'd be surprised some of the pronunciations I've heard in the course of producing our Valancourt audiobooks. Or even just weird accents/enunciations, like the guy narrating a JB Priestley book whose recording of the words "for giants" sounded for all the world like "vaginas".

I wrote an intro to a Centipede Press signed edition of his debut novel The Godsend. Apparently he died in December 2025 but news is just emerging now.
RIP Bernard Taylor, Dead at 91
I have just learned from Valancourt Books that British horror author Bernard Taylor , author of vintage classics like Sweetheart, Sweethear...

I'm happy Valancourt reprinted the book so that you wouldn't have to pay three figures to be this disappointed.

Not looking like getting any news this week, so a choice of short reads: Maigret or the follow up to The Viaduct.

Based on the amount of older classics here I bet you'd enjoy a lot of Valancourt reissues like Elizabeth Jenkins- Harriet, Harry Kressing- The Cook, or Alex Liang's The Cadaver of Gideon Wyck. They put out tons of strange forgotten treasures!

When I saw this as a kid -- so minimal it seemed nearly blank at first sight -- I *had* to read it. And it turned out to be better than I could've imagined.

The recent re-print cover is pretty good, too.

The Mysteries Of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe
Speaking of swooning...this archetypal Gothic novel sees its hapless heroine swooning more than once and weeping an ocean of tears, only matched by her equally lachrymose lover, Valancourt.

Lucy Sante once wrote that the best thing about this 1964 teens-take-over-the-world potboiler is the completely bonkers cover and I’m inclined to agree. Valancourt is publishing a new edition, so you’ll be able to decide for yourself without having to shell out collector prices.
