1903, in the small town of Van Meter, a mysterious winged creature is seen by several respected members of the community terrorizing the townsfolk. Soon, they banded together to pursue the creature to a local coal mine. Where it disappeared into the darkness.

The Van Meter Visitor was reportedly seen by several people to be swooping around town at night in Van Meter, Iowa, in the fall of 1903.

Painting depicting a cryptid known as the Van Meter Visitor, which had apparently emerged from, and eventually retreated back into, a disused coal mine shaft. Compared at the time to a giant bat or an "antediluvian creature," it reportedly stood about 8 feet tall, had featherless bat-like wings, and a beak, but its most mysterious and striking feature was a bright intermittent light shining from its head, compared to an electric searchlight.
