And ex-darling of the show’s fan base, who went from love letters to death threats faster than the speed of cable. Most of all, Max is exhausted. The last thing he wants is to be back in the public eye. But when offered a deal to get out of his contract for good, it’s hard to resist—even if the catch is a pre-season publicity tour with Affinity’s current cast. For anything. Due to my not having a phone.” “What if I swear—swear—that I’ll only text. In emergencies.” Max was about to point out that his not having a phone ruled out all phone-based modes of communication, but it was at that moment that his bag started ringing. Their heads whipped around in unison. For a beat the only sound was that of the muffled ringtone coming from somewhere in the depths of Max’s clothes. It was a buzzing, clattering trill, like a telephone in an old movie. Nico pointed at his ringing bag. “Your bag’s ringing.” “No,” Max said, more out of fear than anything. “Pretty sure it’s ringing, dude.” “I don’t have a phone,” Max insisted. He double-checked his memory. Yep, the recollection of dunking his phone into Vinh’s decorative pond was still there and still vivid, full of squirrel-sized koi fish and Vinh wailing about optimal pH levels.
