This #photofriday finds me with my feet up at home, having finished my holiday read, ‘The Coast Watchers’ by Patrick Lindsay, and getting stuck into the book I left behind, ‘Wewak Mission’ by Lionel Veale, which I’m about halfway through. #histbookchat /2

This week I am reading ‘Wewak Mission’ by Lionel Veale but it’s too precious to chuck in my backpack for a trip away next week so I’ll probably have to run two books on the go for a bit. In the meantime, please accept this shelfie as my humble #photofriday #histbookchat offering. 📚 🇦🇺

This #photoFriday I am concluding my current medical series with a terrific read: ‘When Good Men Do Nothing’ by Griffith Spragg. Enlisting in the AIF in 1941 Spragg joined the 2/3rd Infantry Bn. in Syria in 1942 before moving on to the Kokoda Track and the Aitape-Wewak Campaign. #histbookchat /2

Day 62; Learn Aitape was hit by tsunami in 1998, killing ~2000 ppl. Not sure communities would be prepared now. Find car to Wewak traveling by night. Get to see Wewak seawall, mainly protecting local motor sellers. Its effectiveness questioned by local food sellers. youtube.com/shorts/XHVBW...

‘Wewak Mission’ is brilliant so far. Lionel Veale was a corporal in the 1st Independent Company (Commando) and was sent to Kavieng, New Ireland on 12 July, 1941. After returning to Australia he volunteered for the Coast Watchers and spent the rest of the war in New Guinea. It’s a smashing story! 📚🥇

Maj. Ralph Cheli, USAAC, 5’th Air Force, Wewak, New Guinea, 18 Aug 1943. Medal of Honor - hit by flak leading divebombers against a heavily defended airfield, his plane burst into flames. Rather than abort and disorder the flight, he continued his attack, crashing into the sea. An American hero

Following this successful campaign, the Battalion was landed at Batavia in Java where the survivors became prisoners of war. For the members who were sent home to Australia, the Battalion was reformed and in 1944-45 fought with the 7th Division in the final Aitape-Wewak campaign in New Guinea.

‘Wewak Mission’ by Lionel Veale was a brilliant read. While it does include made-up dialogue, which can sometimes be hit-and-miss for me, I loved every word of this. Sadly, this is the end of my time with Coast Watchers but I’m planning on returning to Lionel Veale and New Guinea later this year.
