... complained about this, they hauled him back and sent him to prison; the judge, Edmund Anderson, was very anti-puritan. Now he's begging to be let off; we don't know if he succeeded. It all sounds pretty harsh, but I dare say the new archbishop, John Whitgift, won't be complaining too loudly.

My first Open House today was an incautiously early timed tour of the Whitgift Almshouses, the last bit of the massive foundation of John Whitgift, archbp of Canterbury. Quite a lot of early foundation content and a really nice founding deed.
