Another for #WorldOkapiDay - an #okapi in the Nubian delegation procession, Persepolis, Apadana, East Stairs, late 5th/early 6th c. Can be fairly sure it's an okapi based on what look like ossicones on its head, a feature unique to giraffids.

1st published #Okapi image from a 1901 watercolor by ZSL fellow Sir Harry Johnston. Scientific name Okapia johnstoni is in his honor. ("Okapi" derived from its Indigenous name "o'api" from the local Lese tribe.)

Okapi's also known as the "forest giraffe" are from the rainforests forests in the Congo Basin.

Although their numbers hard to determine in the wild, experts believe that populations continue to dwindle due to deforestation, poaching, illegal mining and other human threats.
