Happy #WorldOkapiDay !
1st published #Okapi image from a 1901 watercolor by ZSL fellow Sir Harry Johnston. Scientific name Okapia johnstoni is in his honor. ("Okapi" derived from its Indigenous name "o'api" from the local Lese tribe.)

🚨ENDANGERED SPECIES
The first published image of an Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) from 1901, from a watercolor by Sir Harry Johnston. Quite a good likeness considering he hadn't yet seen a live one and only had a skin, skull, and verbal descriptions to work with! Image: color book plate of two okapi, one on left facing forward and one on right in side profile, on a plain cream background, with bottom title "THE OKAPI. (OKAPIA JOHNSTONI) (reduced one half from Sir Harry Johnston's original painting)" Photo image of a single okapi in its native forest habitat, in partial side profile with back end facing out showing its stripes and head turned facing forward. Official World Okapi Day 2022 image from the Okapi Conservation Project's social media toolkit (with white logo superimposed on upper right corner).

Apparently it's #WorldOkapiDay, so here's the okapi diorama at the Academy of Natural Sciences. That large gap is there for a reason: a planned third specimen was never found. #savetheacademy

Happy World Okapi Day! Okapis are endangered & can only be found in small area of central Africa. Their stripes look like a zebra's, but okapis are actually related to giraffes. They have long, dark tongues just like giraffes, & male okapis have ossicones.

Okapi day! The day that started the idea for this project! If fox is my top carnivore, okapi is my top herbivore. Look at how neat! If any animal that can prompt me to do a whole year-long project, its okapi. And a fancy baby! Technically flightless.

Happy World Okapi Day!

Did you know? 💡

The okapi was called the "African unicorn"?
It"s extremely elusive, lives deep in the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and remained completely unknown to Western science until the early 20th century.
