Aren't Wrynecks brilliant!
Turf Hotel, #ExminsterMarshes, Devon. Very interesting to watch Mark V's #Wryneck feeding along a gravel path this afternoon. Super views once again of this enigmatic species 👍. #DevonBirds #UKBirding #birds @rarebirder.bsky.social @birdguides.bsky.social

Wrynecks are just great #birds - member of the #woodpecker family - this one was seen in #poland today last year.

Eurasian Wrynecks have an amazing ability to twist their heads almost 180 degrees. They often do this to mimic a snake when it feels threatened.

A welcome arrival of continental migrants to our Shetland shores over the last couple of days. Several Wrynecks made landfall including this one in the Sumburgh Hotel garden.

Eurasian Wrynecks do breed in the Alicante region but are scarce and generally difficult to find. I managed a few photographs of this male near Alcoi where the habitat is quite different. A nice year tick. #birds #birdoftheday #birdsseenin2026 #birdphotography #birding

The last two days have brought a surge of migrants through south Mainland, Shetland. Personal highlights have included 124 Ruffs at Spiggie (the largest number I’ve seen for years), and a healthy scattering of Wrynecks like this one at Quendale. #BirdingScotland

Wrynecks in the Obs Quarry - nice find by Roger Booth who'd taken a walk over there after we weren't employing him enough with mist-netted birds at the Obs.

Wrynecks apparently still in the Obs Quarry but remaining v elusive

One of the highlights from the summer was a chance to photograph these beautiful Wrynecks whilst on a trip to Croatia #birds

This autumn I will #RepostaWryneck each time one crops up on here. If you are sick of Wrynecks, you are sick of life....😊👍
Wryneck at Turf lock, Devon. Great to watch it feed (that tongue!) & appreciate how small they are when it flew up into the House Sparrow tree, just before the rain came again

Wrynecks are special. Cryptic and often elusive, they can test the patience of the birder. Unless they decide that a sandy track is to their liking! This one in Warwickshire yesterday. @rspb.bsky.social @rarebirdalert.bsky.social @westmidsbirding.bsky.social @wildlifephoto.bsky.social

It took 3 trips to Turf & 33km of running & walking to see the Wryneck. I’ve seen a few Wrynecks over the years but none as well as this.

Also Osprey, Willow Warbler & three Ruff.

This just came up on my feed, a great reminder of last year in Croatia when I got to see the Wrynecks for the first time. Beautiful birds and lucky to get these images of the shy birds #birds #thegardenjungle #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #shropshire #UKwildlife #birdphotography #canon

Cool new preprint led by Martins Briedis: Eurasian wrynecks from Germany use very different migration strategies (from S Europe to sub-Saharan Africa). Multi-sensor logger data show long migration trips are costly, but warming winters may soon favor staying in S Europe doi.org/10.64898/202...

Great start to our #Cyprus tour with 6 Little & 2 Spotted Crakes, 2 Caspian Plovers, 4 Eastern Bonelli’s, 3 Ruppell’s & an Eastern Orphean Warbler, 5 Eurasian Wrynecks & more! #birds #birding #BirdsSeenIn2025

A playback experiment on Wrynecks Jynx torquilla shows that both personal and social information seem to affect habitat selection, but that food availability is the main cue for settlement. More on doi.org/10.1002/2688...

The decade long Wryneck forcefield at St Aldhelm's Head finally fell this morning, with 2 furtive birds found by @moorebirdsbybike.bsky.social and myself around the eastern end of Pier Bottom & the Paddocks @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social

The nets @portlandbirdobs.bsky.social remained firmly furled today as Storm Amy hit us with rain and gusts up to 48mph by evening.A good time to reflect on 12 brilliant days of ringing, good numbers and variety. Autumn Chiffchaffs always reflect a change of seasons and Wrynecks confirm the feeling.

During the past week I have enjoyed seeing Baird's Sandpiper, 2 Pallid Harriers, a surprise Kingfisher at Virkie, 2 Wrynecks and this Greenish Warbler in our garden (our second). On the debit side, numbers of most migrants are a mere fraction of historic levels. #BirdingScotland
