I'll go farther say that it CAN'T be an end-user solution until someone stops trying to build a "linux desktop" and takes a page from Apple: build a desktop OS that happens to have a linux kernel.
There's so much legacy (XWindows being #1 here) that was designed to solve totally different problems!

Have an article up that i'm reading. Apparently, an ad came up at random and locked up xwindows in a weird way. Was eventually able to kill Firefox, but bad state continued. Rebooted. Time to paste the article into LibreOffice, and read it there. Also, it's time to run pi-hole.

It used to be, restoring to a different machine from backup would be a huge problem, because your XWindows authorization and configurations would mess you up badly. That seems to have been fixed. The Linux community is amazing in its ability to fix this stuff rapidly.

I just used the "init=/sbin/bash" magic to recover root on an old 486DX4 laptop runing SuSE 7.1 (From 2001). Amazingly the hard disk still works and it even runs Xwindows ! Sadly I can't get the PCMCIA WiFi card to talk to my HomeHub :-(

mine is double-formatted for bash and zsh so it works the same on either shell and i definitely spent a retrospectively ridiculous amount of time in 1996-97 configuring xwindows

oh yea, the *other* part of that machine I took apart last night was the screen, its some sort of ARM based computer, I'm not sure if this is a primitive windows gui lib or xwindows...

I'm a unix person (and I know MacOS X used the utilities from FreeBSD, which is my OS of choice, but I find the mac ui restrictive. XWindows for me :^)
