Good morning from Xinjiang, China!

absolutely predictable, Sachs defended the camps in Xinjiang.
So many people have gone down so many rabbit holes that I lose track, and everyone lost their damn minds in 2020 one way or another, but I don't remember hearing any steps in a story that get us to "Jeffrey Sachs is now a guy who appears on Tucker Carlson's show to defend Assad." What? Huh?

I’ve seen this with Xinjiang. Meanwhile Xinjiang scholars have taken risks to talk about this because the Islamophobia is so potent and toxic
The people who say "why this obsession with Palestine? why don't you post about Sudan?" never post about Sudan themselves.
What they mean is "it's fine you don't care about Sudan. You should be similarly indifferent to Palestine"

(of course, many people do post about both and other crises)

... a large majority of hotels simply refused to accept anybody with a Xinjiang ID - even Han people from Xinjiang in many cases!

"Wow why do you care about anti-Asian hate crimes when the Chinese government is committing a GENOCIDE in Xinjiang" well that has fucking nothing to do with Chinese-American New Yorkers, so
Fundamentally Jews being safe in NYC has *nothing inherently to do* with Palestine. Israel's genocide of Palestinians is a contributing factor to the rise in antisemitism, but that could end and there would still be antisemitic violence and harassment. Gotta disentangle them.

hey can you tell me what "Xinjiang" translates to?

Never ask a tankie what "Xinjiang" translates to
The rule of geopolitics is that successor states inherit all the claims but none of the blame so the previous Chinese dynasties and states gobbling up their neighbors to form the borders of modern China did the aggression, the PRC had nothing to do with that

High above the snow line amid the vast Tianshan Mountains, at an altitude of 3,000–4,800 meters, the Xinjiang Tianshan snow lotus thrives in the extreme conditions of bitter cold, thin air and intense ultraviolet radiation

I think referring to the Xinjiang internment camps as a “specific pet example” is pretty wild
No, Will! That would be you, silly, when you take the idea of “do you truly not think “concentration camps” is applicable to America”, and respond with “the US doesn’t have anything like this specific pet example”, as though that’s an answer to what I asked you.

Go ahead and answer, Will!

it's time to do satellite work like Buzzfeed News, of blessed memory, did for the Xinjiang camps.
Yes, I’ve noticed this too. There’s a photo-op room with the most alarmingly tattooed prisoners but there’s no real indication that anyone else is at CECOT and guards appear to outnumber prisoners 10-to-1. In my darkest moments I think they’re disposing anyone who doesn’t look enough like a gangster
Is almost *anyone* at CECOT alive?

Reportedly no prisoner has ever been released from CECOT, and while CECOT is open to selfie visits from pro-torture politicians, their pictures always feature the same room and show a small number of hand-picked Salvadoran prisoners who fit the desired aesthetic.
