When basalt cools the resulting contraction can create hexagonal weathering. Navajo Sandstone can also show hexagonal weathering; but, it is caused by expansion of the rock as it decompresses when exposed.

Hexagonal weathering in Navajo Sandstone. Caused as the rock is exhumed by erosion. Since it lithified a depth under higher pressure the lower depth/exposure causes the rock to expand slightly. The polygonal patterns form to accomodate the increased volume. http://giw.utahgeology.org/giw/index.php/geosites/article/view/62

Yant Flat (Candy Cliffs), Utah
I wandered for hours, exploring the textured terrain of the petrified dunes at Yant Flat, in the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area’s Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness (aka Candy Cliffs)

"Mosaic at Yant Flat" -- Red and white stripes are one captivating detail of the Colorado Plateau's redrock geology. Checkboard erosion patterns are another. At little-known Yant Flat in SW Utah, you get both attractions at once, for the price of a short hike. #utah #yantflat #leeds #redrock #dawn

Yant Flat (Candy Cliffs), Utah
I’m looking through my photos from the past week and came across this one. This place was wild! I never made it to The Wave, didn’t win the lottery, but I’m glad I found the Yant Flats Trail on AllTrails. I was pretty much the only one there… I passed a couple other people along the trail, but had this whole landscape to myself.

Yant Flat Trail, Near St. George, Utah
I am in Utah, surrounded by so much rich texture! I’ve taken hundreds of photos, but I’m here celebrating my birthday and haven’t had time to look through them, so this is all I have for now. I might try to slip in a couple more for the Blue Sky Art Show “Texture” theme when I have some downtime later!

Yant Flat Trail, Near St. George, Utah
I found this spectacular landscape to explore when I was headed out of St. George. Yant Flat is located in the southwest part of Utah between St. George and Leeds.

If you’ve ever tried and failed to get permits to The Wave in Coyote Buttes North in Arizona, Yant Flat is a pretty cool alternative in Utah. It’s a similar red rock landscape.
