I’m not saying an AI model can’t work on Yocto since I’m sure it can be taught the skills to run the commands that I’m running to verify things since that’s how it works for every other kind of project you can use AI models on. But with Yocto sometimes the build steps can take a very long time.

You have to actually run the scripts and the Yocto system will tell me what it is that I need to know.
At this point, I feel like I have a leg up on people who need to be prompted through the steps of a big task that I can prompt myself through, by Googling a combination of docs and AI summaries.

The good news is that whatever model he was using put together a good explanation of all the Yocto layers and parts and pieces and what’s needed. The funnier part is that I’m almost done after multiple weeks actually doing the work of upgrading to Yocto 6.0, so I don’t need AI to prompt my steps.

I had a 2 hour Teams call with some colleagues working on the Web frontend to the cloud part of the product I’m working on who are really into AI, and they set up a bunch of Markdown files to tell GitHub Copilot about the big project of upgrading the device software from Yocto 4.0 to Yocto 5.0.

What I was trying to make sure I'd gotten right when upgrading the Linux kernel config from 5.15 to 6.18 which Yocto "simplifies" by making an entire repo of nested kernel config fragments that apply on top of each other based on BitBake environment variables. Yocto merges several layers together.

For the purposes of bringing the firmware up-to-date with the newest versions of all the Yocto system "layers" (think of it like Gentoo or Arch, but for Linux-based embedded system), I have to make sure that I include all the device drivers for Linux 6.18 that correspond to the ones for Linux 5.15.

I made a tool that shows where the time goes when you compile software. It’s called buildprof. Run it in front of any build command and it puts every process the build spawns on a timeline. It doesn’t care whether the build is Cargo, Ninja, Make, Zig or a pile of shell scripts.
