Zainichi Koreans are Koreans who immigrated (or were forcibly brought) to Japan before 1945, and the descendants of such immigrants. Yu has been the subject of anti-Korean racism in Japan for years, including bomb and other death threats.

The presence of ethnic Koreans in Japan, or "zainichi Koreans," is one of the legacies of Japanese colonialism. A Nation Within provides analysis of politics among zainichi Koreans & reshapes our understanding of Japanese history, Korean history, and the Cold War in Asia

The zainichi generation are fascinating, the Taiwanese ones especially often are still imperial apologists because the invasion there was simply a generation ahead of the rest of Asia and it's a weird contrast to the deep enmity every other nation has for imperial Japan's never apologized for crimes
In 1952, Japan stripped Japanese nationality from Koreans and Taiwanese who had held it under the empire. No one was given a choice; the decree was issued by government circular. Their descendants hold special permanent residency today.

I mean I have strong feelings on why Japan as an ethnostate is bad. See the treatment of Zainichi Koreans for example.

Most foreign residents in Japan must carry a residence card at all times. Special permanent residents, most of them Zainichi Koreans, aren't issued one at all. A Tokyo hotel demanded it anyway, then refused entry to a guest who had booked a room.

And yes that is what’s happening but a more apt comparison might be how you’d feel if your 3rd generation zainichi friend, your friend on a student visa or your foreign mom friend with PR and a mortgage got arrested for no reason. But honestly I’m not sure I even want to know the answer to that.

Just putting this out there: Referring to Japanese citizens who are ethnically Korean as "Zainichi Koreans", and especially using "Zainichi" as a noun referring specifically to ethnic Koreans, is not something white anglophones who consider themselves progressives should be doing.

So Japanese companies would need to disclose who is Zainichi? Sounds really great. Just wonderful stuff.
1/ The Trump Administration is seeking to force foreign companies worldwide to ban diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes within their firms if they want to do business with the US government. It's an aggressive expansion of its anti-DEI crusade. ⬇️

Japan has a lot of immigrant workers because of population and age demographics. This isnt any excuse, but rather its worth knowing something about the issue. Anyway a lot of the complaints are often about zainichi koreans who have been there for generations already. Its the same shit we see here
Apparently 36% of Japanese voters believe that "immigrants are taking our jobs" bro what immigrants does Japan even have?? ATP a solid like 40% of voters *in every country* are just driven by completely imaginary grievances

recommend (esp if you can read Korean) this manhwa called Osaka Loop Line. a Zainichi Korean boy gets mixed up with the yakuza in 1968 Osaka and is asked to help evict a Korean shantytown to help build the Osaka Loop Line subway. compelling tale about identity, displacement, and finding a home
