And on this note, the Smithsonian _is not part of the executive branch_. I hope they remember that fact.
It's critical for everyone to remember what an Executive Order is. It is the President communicating orders to members of the executive branch. Policies to pursue, actions to take, etc. They are not laws. They are not close to being laws. They are formalized memos to employees. That's all.

I 100% agree with the observation of how the technology works - Google almost certainly regularly pulls GIS data from the GNIS and updates its own maps database, entirely automated.
However the fact that they don’t override this when someone is being obviously ridiculous _is a policy choice_.

According to USGS GNIS "Per Secretarial Order 3453, Lake Ontario has been renamed to Lake America. The basemaps for GNIS are in the process of being updated."
So Google (& Apple, OpenStreetMap, & everyone else who ingests GNIS) will start calling it Lake America within a few weeks.

This should be understood in tandem with the SCOTUS order yesterday. Profiling _is the policy._ There is no individualized assessment. It is based on going after people who they think are likely to be unauthorized. Even at best that’s reliant on their own perception.

Interestingly, the intuition I felt and spoke from -- that embodied knowing -- is precisely the kind of thing AI, for all of its performative anthropomorphic gesturing at the simulacrum of personhood, can't do. Tech billionaires want us to believe that our embodied/human ways of knowing are useless!

Corruption requires explict quid pro quo. It is not corrupt to take an action that aligns with the interest of a person who gives you a gift, unless the official action was in direct response to that gift--a bribe. Terms matter. Accuracy and fairness matters. Regardless of what social media wants.

The reason to be conscious of the risk of terrifying people isn’t that they don’t have any reason to be afraid. It’s that being too afraid to live your life _is harmful_ eventually.
