Candidates for Congress Nationwide Begin Responding to Questionnaire on Pesticides and Organic Agriculture - Beyond Pesticides Daily News Blog
(Beyond Pesticides, October 5, 2026) The responses to the nonpartisan Candidate Questionnaire, Agrichemicals and the Future of Food and Farming in the United States—sent to all those running for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives—shows a wide and deep knowledge of pesticides and organic agriculture issues by those early respondents who are mostly challenging front runners in congressional races. The questionnaire was sent out at the end of September through early October with a deadline of October 16. Beyond Pesticides is calling on voters and organizations to send the...

Seeds of doubt: Big Food faces regenerative‑agriculture questions
Is the regenerative agriculture movement among major food and drink corporations a fudge? Something akin to all those 2030 carbon emissions targets made at the start of the decade that are fast approaching and increasingly unlikely to be met; or worse, fading away? Or similar to the promises – made prior to the net-zero ones – to cut back on single-use plastic packaging and now left withering on the vine, labelled ‘too difficult’, ‘too inconvenient’ or ‘too costly’, after five years of failed voluntary action? These failures do not span all companies, nor are they confined only to greenhouse gases or disposable packaging. However, the collective failures on arguably the two most high-profile environmental sustainability priorities of recent times have led to concerns that the ambition and hype of the regenerative agriculture transition is following the same furrows. At least so far. “Regenerative agriculture may be reaching a similar stage to net-zero commitments a few years ago,” María Montosa Ródenas, technical specialist at FAIRR, the investor network, says. Early announcements and broad ambitions have attracted attention, she adds, but investors are demanding more transparency, interim milestones and evidence of real-world impact. To find that information – if it is even...

Kansas Prairie Festival Celebrates Agriculture That Protects Soil, Water, and Communities
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... SALINA, Kan. – In 1976, Wes and Dana Jackson launched The Land Institute as a nonprofit school to teach a small group of students ways to grow food that respected nature, conserved energy and water, and managed wastes. As one of the nation’s first regional nonprofit environmental and farm research organizations devoted to land stewardship, the Institute set sail in the powerful current of alternative ideas and new organizations in that era that were determined to change how America operated. You recall that only six years prior 20 million Americans held public demonstrations in support of the first Earth Day. In 1978, though, just two years after it opened, Wes Jackson, a plant geneticist, dramatically shifted the Institute’s work to basic science and plant research devoted to accomplishing an immense feat. He sought to completely overturn the 10,000-year-old system of grain production. Instead of plowing and seeding and harvesting annually, practices that depleted the soil, and wasted water and energy, Jackson proposed developing crops that were planted once, developed deep roots, grew back year after year like perennial flowers or apple trees, and were much less vulnerable to insects, diseases, and droughts. His idea...

it's a bean counting exercise. can't just say "we need to eat so dont count these beans." ag isnt binary.

if you care about water conservation, policy that makes agriculture less wasteful (and it is massively wasteful for stuff like beef!) does orders of magnitude more than fuckin w computers.

President Felon’s schedule is packed with 29 days of nonstop stops for MAGA candidates. Let him run himself ragged crisscrossing the country. Tonight, let’s watch him lie about the losses he caused for the cattle farmers he screwed over in Nebraska.

Pro-AI people always go "but agriculture" and yeah the amount of water consumption in Ag is a problem, but at least we get something out of it. AI gives us nothing.
October 5, 2026 at 5:59 PM
I have written and published articles in my capacity as a film scholar about how awful Big Ag is. The opposite is true. This talking point comparing things to agriculture definitely is being promoted by AI companies. Amazon just published a page defending its data centers with this exact claim.

Through the great migrations from Anatolia — the same people who brought agriculture to the Mediterranean.
They also brought their loyal companions.

The constant comparison to agriculture is being systematically used to push aside calls for regulation of AI *not* for more regulation of agriculture. If you were really invested in ag as an issue you'd be focused on that rather than doing whataboutism.

Man, if you want to advocate for more sustainable agriculture, more power to you! But don't use it as a rationale to not criticize AI's water use, which is a real and acute problem for a bunch of areas of the world.
October 5, 2026 at 5:43 PM
Oh god. Not the fucking agriculture comparison again. Yeah, of course it doesn't use as much as agriculture (the sector of society responsible for FEEDING THE WHOLE WORLD). Ag is the second largest contributor to climate change. Anything will pale in comparison.

AI water use is in line with light industrial use and light industry uses a fraction of what chemicals production or agriculture use.

Turns out they’ve never seen agriculture.
I mean, I was just talking to someone who works in water conservation and they said they'd never seen anything like the amount of water consumption caused by AI. Why would this person be so far off the mark?
